Trade Partnerships!

Post by Matt »

Hello friends. Many people have tried to evaluate GM performance over the years. We can look at championships, regular season record - or even a convoluted ranking formula that takes into account lots of variables - but these measures are missing an evaluation of the quintessential value of our beautiful Sim League: TRADING.

Some may want to examine all of the trades that have been made in the league’s history and come up with a measure that determines which GM “won” each trade, and then tallies up trade wins and trade losses over the years. Some may even want to go a step further and rate each trade on a scale to weigh bigger wins heavier against small trades. To those people, I say: you got time for that? Aint nobody got time for all that. Instead, we’re gonna look at quantity. Who are the biggest volume traders in the league? Who do they trade with? Who don’t they trade with?

To do this, I looked through all of the completed trades on the new boards and put them into a google sheet (just the teams involved). See below for some interesting results!

Image

The Raptors have made 93 trades since we moved to the new boards, followed by the Kings at 83, and the Magic close behind at 78. Together, these three teams have accounted for 19% of trades (backing out the 8 trades that the Raptors and Magic have done together and the one trade between the Raptors and Kings).

On the other side of the spectrum, the Jazz, Hornets, and Grizzlies account for the fewest trades in the league, with 14, 28, and 24 trades respectively. Are we sure Ralph and Josh are really part of the Skillz tree? These three also account for 5 championships and 12 finals appearances between the three of them (for comparison, the top trading trio has 3 championships and 5 finals appearances). Is trading overrated?!?

Those six teams are the only six in the league that aren’t within one standard deviation of the mean (43.5 trades).

Next up: trade pairs!

Image

The friendliest trade relationship in the league is between Detroit and Toronto, where 12 deals have been brokered thus far (4 more than the next highest pair!) Other frequent trade partners are the Kings/Nuggets, Cavs/Pacers, and Magic/Raptors, each with 8 trades between them (Blazers/Raptors also coming in strong with 7 trades).

Trade Embargoes:

Image

No team in the league has traded with every other team! The closest is are the Kings and Magic, who shockingly have a trade embargo with each other! The only other team the Kings haven’t made a trade with is the Blazers. The Magic have traded with everyone but the Kings, Grizzlies, and Jazz. Checking in on our other big trader, the Raptors have an embargo with the Bulls, Knicks, Hawks, Grizz, and Jazz.

If you're curious / want to manipulate the data yourself, here's the google sheet with the scratch work:

I think it's really just Grizz for me because I've done deals with the Kings and Jazz on the old boards RIP them boards...

Fascinating article, would've never guessed I've done 8 trades with the Raptors.

I didn't grab anything from the old boards, but don't think there has been one in the new boards

I wonder how many trades the Raptors have made if you exclude trades with second round picks as the focal point

Love the article! Don't think it includes a number of trades though tbh!
