2020 NDL BALL-er Report

Post by jwoo »

We were all very sad when the NDL season was cancelled. In honor of their sacrifice (they all got COVID for 100 days and it was brutal), here's my ranking of the top 25 prospects currently toiling away in the minors. Yay for the NDL!

26 (bonus). Allonzo Trier, Texas Legends

Allonzo Trier is one of my least favorite players of all time. He is a total bucket in the NDL, but also turns it over 4.4 times a game, which might be a record?

25. Deividas Sirvydis, Maine Celtics

This guy had A pot coming into the draft, but was kinda mid in the NDL with some efficiency and turnover struggles. My guess is his handles won't be quite that booty (from my experience turnovers tend to scale down a bit when guys go to SLN) but they certainly aren't great. He needs a little TC magic.

24. Shake Milton, Raptors 905 (on Greensboro roster)

Shake had a huge turnover spike in his second season, which i think had to be tied to Ojeleye graduating to SLN. Good evidence of how volume can impact turnovers when a guy has passing. There's an outside chance he actually plays minutes for me next year, which doesn't make me feel good, but the offensive splits are pretty solid.

23. Mo Wagner, Capital City Go-Go

Total NDL monster with nice offensive stats. Not sure how well any of it translates in SLN.

22. Tacko Fall, Grand Rapids Gold

Not sure if Kipke will have the bandwidth to help him rebound, but his blocks look elite already and could make him a one-position Ibaka backup guy?

21. Dennis Smith Jr, Capital City Go-Go

I kinda feel like Smith's offense should be better. He's almost certainly not gonna get camps due to the long pecking order ahead of him in DC, but if he shot better he has some stuff to like with his steals and ball control. Not sure what the odds are he becomes more than a passable backup due to the quality of PG play in SLN.

20. Eric Paschall, Raptors 905

Paschall might be my best NDL player but your guess is as good as mine how playable he's going to be with that nasty defense and bad rebounding. He might need to be a SF in balanced. His inside scoring is for sure yoked though. He's basically Ojeleye-lite based on what he's done offensively so far, but I'm not that confident yet in how it'll translate. He's fun as shit though!

19. Troy Brown, Raptors 905

Entered the league at 19, has had nice TCs, maybe room for growth - he takes great care of the ball, rebounds well for a wing and needs shooting growth (with 16 left in camps for JS and outside) Not sure if he will get that development in Toronto since we have so many prospects...so trade for him!

18. Donte DiVincenzo, Santa Cruz Warriors

A big name with good boards at the 2 who needs offensive camps. I think he'll be utilitarian if he develops on track as a bench guy, but would need a big offensive leap to be more.

17. Chuma Okeke, Raptors 905

He only started with C potential but he's already a pretty elite defender and rebounder for a wing, probably the best in the NDL. Optimistic that he'll become a nice role player, but unsure about his offensive volume/efficiency, which will determine if he's more than a bit player in the end.

16. Goga BBBitadze, Grand Rapids Gold

Goga is super fun and has a fun name. His turnovers and efficiency are a bit concerning, but the stocks and boards are in a great place already.

15. Darius Bazley, Anaheim Arsenal

He came in at 19, had a good TC, and now has pretty good stocks and boards. His offense is probably trash, but Bazley looks like a moldable project player who could easily move up the list with another good TC.

14. Terence Davis, Wisconsin Herd

Very solid first TC has Davis looking like a nice scorer. Needs growth everywhere else, rebounds it well for a guard, has a pathway to being useful.

13. Frank Ntilikina, Windy City Bulls

It's a bit of a bummer that Ntilikina got supercamped while in the NDL and somehow shot it worse this season, but his steals are sweet and he'll probably be a solid backup, especially due to the investment level in him already.

12. Jarred Vanderbilt, Lakeland Magic

Just realized he gets so many steals. He shot it a lot for someone with only C inside. I'd guess that scales down and he becomes a bench-quality butt.

11. Kevin Knox, Sioux Falls Skyforce
Knox lit it up this season but will have diminished gains. He must have pretty high inside scoring to be as efficient as he was with only B outside - it looks like that rating is jumper-tilted more than threes. His defense and boards aren't a strength, but he looks like a guy who can contribute in a balanced offense.

10. Cam Johnson, RGV Vipers

Johnson lit up the NDL for 13 games after being delegated, but he went down on Day 60 so he won't get a potential boost this off-season. Still think he has a really solid offensive profile. His turnovers were somewhat notable but he shot a ton.

9. Luke Kennard, Fort Wayne Mad Ants

He could be JJ Redick-lite. There are a lot of these types of guys (white shooters) but Kennard looks like a good version of that.

8. Robert Williams, Windy City Bulls

I think Time Lord becomes a contributor off the bench for the Bulls pretty soon - he feels Larry Sanders-y. Nice ratings that back up his production. Diminished gains, but pretty good floor here I would guess as long as the turnovers aren't a problem.

7. Coby White, Long Island Nets

White needs some camps to help his shooting, but he takes really good care of the ball, especially for a young PG (low passing for sure) and looks like he could have a Steve Kerr-ish role if his ratings pop nicely. He also went into the NDL at 19, which is a nice bonus. I think Steven probably will develop him effectively as he rebuilds.

6. Keldon Johnson, Lakeland Magic

Johnson looks like he's loaded with inside scoring and potentially strength. Can he learn to shoot? We'll see. But he posted really impressive rookie numbers that are in line with his notes/how he plays IRL, and was leading the league in scoring before it shut down.

5. Collin Sexton, Ontario Clippers

Yet another guy who's in the all offense no defense mold (and someone I never liked IRL). I was at the game where he went 3-on-5, it was crazy. He's probably gonna score and not do much else, but looks Ben Gordon-y, which is who I once compared him to but not in a nice way.

4. Grayson Allen, Sioux Falls Skyforce

I think Allen has a pretty translatable SLN profile, he's a good shooter and looks to have good inside scoring and passable defense at the 2. He does not have a stip where he trips people! He could be a nice combo bench guard.

3. John Collins, Stockton Kings

Collins has a nice mix of stocks after a few years of seasoning. Not sure exactly where he ends up - possible he's not too efficient or a great rebounder - but he's a guy who produces IRL and seems to have a good production profile. If he can score it without hurting you too much and hogging the ball he might be pretty decent.

2. Cam Reddish, Anaheim Arsenal

Reddish looks really exciting after a good first TC. He's built in a way that might allow him three seasons of full gains, and he looks like a solid scorer with reasonable handling. Good base to improve upon, his rebounding being the primary flaw in the profile. I think he probably winds up playing the two. He's younger TC-wise than the previously listed guys who are built similarly so he got a nod here.

1. Rui Hachimura, NAZ Suns (currently on Kings roster)

The centerpiece of the Boban trade after a huge first TC, Rui will get full gains and has B- ratings in all the right spots, making him a pretty interesting and moldable prospect. The move here is probably to not camp him and hope he can get a second season of full gains. His NDL stats weren't all that good, but projecting out, I think he's a fun player, and Tyler is definitely going to give him the love he needs to make it work.
