2022 Offseason Recap

Post by Hoff »

This was one of the most exciting offseasons in a long time. After a few lull seasons of very little trading and movement, SLN is finally back to the madness and disorder! In this piece, I am going to recap the 2022 offseason starting with the draft, FA, then trades around the league. Hope everyone enjoys!

DRAFT:
This was a very exciting draft "objectively" as the new lotto system came into effect with the addition of Ashes using the spoliers! Sick addition to the lotto that needs to stay even though I can only imagine how annoying it must've been. The3 biggest jumps in the draft were the Mavericks moving up to 1, Bulls moving up to 3, and Raptors moving up to 4.

With the first pick the Mavericks selected Chet, who profiles to be a unicorn big like Porzingis with more defense and less rebounding. (I am praying to the SIM GOD to have good rebounding camps). This was for sure a debate between Chet, Paolo, and Amen. Paolo is going to be an elite scorer and Amen might be the best player out of this draft. Understood why Nolan took Paolo as he should've been the #2 guy off the board. Next was Jalen Williams (tg Matt didn't pick Jaylin Williams) who profiles to be an elite wing and rising star in the league. Next was Amen, who maybe had the most hype out of anyone in the draft coming off a generational month of basketball and undoubtedly cementing himself as one of the faces of the NBA in the next 2/3 season (He just pulled off a triple double in the garden last night, but still lost because Knicks are going to Knicks).

The next 10 picks were really interesting and probably could have gone in any order. It will be intriguing to see how Auser develops compared to Amen. I liked Bobby's high floor, ready-to-go picks with Kessler and Williams. I think almost everyone is sleeping on Jabari Smith Jr. putting together is profile, starting ratings, 19 years old, and a Houston Rocket. Tari Eason should also be a dynamite defender that can play multiple positions. Jaden Ivey slipping then sent down to NDL was an amazing move for Jordo. I think Jeremy Sochan is going to be really good with his starting ratings and a 19 year old getting NDL gains. Overall, this was a really interesting draft that was deep.

Free Agency:
Day 1:
The biggest snag was Kyrie Irving accepting the Clippers offer. Amazing signing by Bobby who arguably gets the best PG in the game, and is now playing him against the other best PG in the game. However, how will Kyrie and Fultz mesh? Kyrie already made it clear he better play PG.

The Raptors signing Shabazz was a good snag, already moving him and Poole to the Blazers for draft capital. Shabazz is coming off a career season.

I think Tyler got cute with his resigning offer for Bonga? Correct me if I am wrong. Heat get Bonga who is young, cheap, and might actually fit well with Wiseman and Sengun. Sometime down the road will Scoops win a 2nd championship with an inside offense?

Nets made two big signings in Russell and Ayton. Both have since been traded. Russell was stolen from the Cavaliers and Ayton was a resigning. Good work by the SWAMP.

The biggest fish of them all... Semi! However, he resigned with the Hornets. Happy for JBurns, sad for league parity.

Don't sleep on the Pacers signing of Grayson Allen. Uncamped and did an efficient 20 ppg last season.

Day 2 and 3:
Couple of older vets were signed by new team: Monta and Jimmy. Monta is a sneaky good signing by the Hornets, who was kind of forgotten about after the Amnesty Clause was used on him. Jimmy is a value player who was already moved via trade.

The Cavaliers retained both Boogie and Thon on 1 year deals, which makes them possible FAs next season, but also allows for cap flexibility in the future.

Raptors signing Bazley flew under the radar. He is only 22, had NDL gains, still showing A potential, has camps left, and his ratings are really nice. I think he can be a really good player one day soon, and now he's off to greener pastures in Detroit playing next to Hali and Cade.

Day 4 and 5:
Blazers and the Celtics retained Grant and Simmons on cheap deals. The Simmons deal, especially, should attract value on the market.

The Nets signed LiAngelo on an MLE, which may be bad for the BBB stip, but good for SWAMP tales and the league.

The Hawks signed Vit Krejci to almost a minimum and is now supercamp bound?! I like it, why not? A Potential and already A- outside at 22.

A sneaky resigning in Jarred Vanderbilt by the Magic who is a A- rebounder. Merv is lucky since I offered an MLE.

TRADES:
Denver / Sacramento: the first move of LaMelo Ball and the first of many moves by both teams. This was Denver's initial public trade to turn around the tank where he gets a swiss army knife Kelly Oubre and steal machine Ricky Rubio in exchange for 2 of the Ball Brothers. This trade is all about how LaMelo develops in the next TCs.

Sacramento / Golden State: Jabari Parker finally moves! I know Jabari was Clint's baby. Clint gets back a cheaper Jabari Parker in Denzel Valentine though.

Milwaukee / Dallas: One of the first superstars to move this offseason, Spida Mitchell and Josh Giddey is traded for Trae Young. Milwaukee was looking for a PG to play behind and/or beside SGA and gets his guy on a relatively cheap contract. Mavericks get one of the best SGs in the league and a top 10 pick prospect from last years draft.

Toronto / Portland: Toronto sends Shabazz and Poole to Portland in exchange for expiring Monta (amnesty clause used) and 2 future FRP. Shabazz and Poole bring a ton of scoring with little defense to Portland that already has a ton of scoring, I think? But they are good players and should bring an instant impact to a team that made strides last year.

Orlando / Denver: Denver's 2nd big move of the offseason is Kawhi Leonard to now pair with Rubio and Oubre. Kipke paid a ton for Kawhi given where the market was but when you have a guy you like and fits your scheme, you go get him. Orlando gets Bagley, Dort, Eason and valuable LAL picks. Good for Kipke and good for Merv!

Dallas / Sacramento: the 2nd time LaMelo was moved this offseason but has found his home in Dallas. LaMelo is finally going to get run if he's ready or not. I definitely overpaid and banking on a big TC, but willing to take the risk on LaVar's son a former 1st round pick. Obviously, good value for Jesse as he gets 2 good prospects and bunch of picks that may or may not amass to anything special.

Dallas / SWAMP: S&T for Ayton. Ayton was signed to a big contract but willing to overpay for good rebounding in this day in age. He should mesh really well with Mobley and Chet and with a bunch of rookie contracts, he should fit easily in our cap space. SWAMP receives to GSW 1sts for Ayton, so pretty equal value, I think?

Orlando / Phoenix: Merv quickly flips Bagley to Tyler for 4 1st round picks and Chriss. I get why Tyler did this, and like I said above, all good overpaying for a guy you really want. Good value for Merv. Watch out for Chriss you can fully blossom in Orlando.

Los Angeles / Sacramento: Boban is moved within division along with Josh Hart. Great move by both teams as Bobby wants to start winning and Jesse wants to retool.

New York / Denver: MASSIVE TRADE ALERT! I think this is the largest package I have seen for a player. 7 1st round picks and a top tier prospect for Embiid. Like this for both teams in terms of what they are trying to do. Kipke fully flipped into win-now in star-studded moves and Nav retools and extends the longevity of the Knicks as they are.

Orlando / SWAMP / Cleveland: Seems like the Nets made out really well here getting 4 1sts and Keegan Murray. Understand why Merv and Manty both made the move. Manty needed a PG and upgraded to Steph from Russell, and Merv wanted to get younger and clear some future salary off the book. Fun trade!

Toronto / Detroit: Bazley seemed like a hot commodity on the trade market last night, and Woo settled for future Detroit picks, which carry good value. Detroit gets a high upside player, who is young, and still has camps left. He fits perfectly in Hali and Cade's timeframe as well.

Sorry if I missed any action from the offseason! I'm very happy with where the league is, and I think this offseason was a jolt of energy and engagement that was missing for a season or two. Keep it up everyone! And good luck to everyone in TC!

Preach! GSW and Santa Cruz Development is top notch in this league. I'm a lucky man to have Garuba in the NDL now.
