FA Day 2/3 Grades

FA Day 2/3 Grades
Woo beat me to the punch on Day 1, so I'll take a crack at reviewing these considerably less exciting deals from Day 2/3.
2027 182 Lakers Sign SG Donovan Mitchell for $16,000,000 over one year.
Grade: B+. Mitchell is a big name guy with smol name production. After a very promising 2025 with the Hawks, he decided to lay a big rotten egg in a contract year to ensure he’d have to move out of Atlanta (I’ve heard he’s been labeled “persona non grata” at the Cheetah Lounge so there’s really nothing left for him in that city). It’s a big one year deal that the Lakers should be able to move for a pick or nice stack of RP – but given their intention to flip the switch out of the tank next year, it might have been better for them to retain him on a multi-year deal and hope he returns to form.
2027 182 Jazz Sign PG Fred VanVleet for $27,000,000 over 3 years.
Grade: A- Very solid deal for FVV, who’s still effective at age 33. If he survives camps (or moves before them), this should be a valuable piece for the Jazz to flip. Would have liked this to be 2 years instead of 3, but that’s a nit – nice snag.
2027 182 Mavericks Sign SG Edmond Sumner for $4,600,000 over one year.
Grade: B-. Most competent when he was playing 8 min a game in Chicago, Sumner was downright buns for Philly last year, putting up below average numbers across the board. I guess he’s OK deep bench depth, but I’m hoping this is just an expiring salary for the Mavs to move in a bigger deal.
2027 182 Raptors Sign SF Chuma Okeke for $6,000,000 over one year.
Grade: B+. Chuma is a Prime Day Super Value deal version of Amen, so it’s fitting that he’ll be his understudy in Toronto. Really nice depth piece of a Raptors roster that barely needed it. Nice deal, cementing the fact that it’s the Raptors’ year.
2027 182 Mavericks Sign PF Jaren Jackson Jr. for $4,500,000 over one year.
Grade: C-. I'll put it this way, there were some considerably nicer MLE targets out there. JJJ remains a player that would probably be a pretty good SF if he was allowed to play there, but instead he toils as a possession-negative PF who does a whole lotta nothing in the rebounding and offense departments. If his name was Jim Smith, would he be on a roster?
2027 182 Heat Sign SG Grayson Allen for $15,000,000 over one year.
Grade: Filler. At least I hope so. Big trade coming for Miami?? Or is Grayson just going to be making it rain at Elleven all year?
2027 182 Bullets Sign C Udoka Azubuike for $30,000,000 over 2 years.
Grade: A-. It’s rich for a very slightly imperfect big butt, but that’s probably what it was going to take to resign him. If Udoka is still on the border of flat A rebounding (or he ticks up in camps), this one looks pretty good for Washington. However, with the current state of the Bullets org, it remains to be seen whether he’ll be on the move shortly.
2027 182 Trail Blazers Sign C Nathan Knight for $1,200,000 over one year.
Grade: ?? Have never even heard of this guy, but apparently he’s been in the league for 5 years (and on 5 different teams in that time). He is not very good, and this is not a lot of money, so I don’t particularly care.
2027 182 Nets Sign C Onyeka Okongwu for $4,500,000 over one year.
Grade: B-. A definite ratings whore, though you could get worse for your MLE. Hell, you could get Jaren Jackson Jr.; Okongwu is worth about 12 of him.
2027 182 Warriors Sign C Isaiah Hartenstein for $1,440,000 over one year.
Grade: C+. I don’t know why, but I have a feeling Clint would have been devastated if Hartenstein walked in FA. I’m pretty sure that he was the actual prize for GS in the Sullinger trade.
2027 182 Cavaliers Sign SG Keyonte George for $653,350 over one year.
Grade: What? This should have been a Day 4/5 minimum guy, so I guess the Cavs get there first? And steal Keyonte George from the masses? Guy’s played in 42 games in 4 years.
2027 182 Mavericks Sign SF GG Jackson for $11,000,000 over one year.
Grade: Filler. Nice, let’s get moving with this article, my lamb over rice is getting cold.
2027 182 Mavericks Sign SF Jett Howard for $7,000,000 over one year.
Grade: Filler.
2027 183 Nets Sign PF Zion Williamson for $8,000,000 over one year.
Grade: Filler. Wait, no. Maybe? I don’t think I’d trust Zion in my lineup as far as I can throw him, and I’m pretty sure any such attempt would land me in the hospital immediately. 8M isn’t a lot, but the former number 1 pick has dropped quickly down the value ladder. Probably because he’s so fat and can't hold himself up on the rungs.
2027 183 Raptors Sign SF Denzel Valentine for $4,500,000 over one year.
Grade: A-. Now there’s an MLE. Valentine is DiVincenzo from Wish, and that’s a compliment. Nice wing rebounder who doesn’t turn it over. I say again – Raptors’ year.
2027 183 Rockets Sign PG Alex Caruso for $4,500,000 over one year.
Grade: B+. Nice MLE get here as well – Caruso may end up starting over the slowly decaying corpse of GP2, or could be a nice stocky backup (as long as he himself doesn’t start to decay).
2027 183 Bullets Sign SF Miles Bridges for $4,500,000 over one year.
Grade: C+. Bridges was good for about 2 seasons, now he’s a bit of an offensive AND defensive liability. B rebounds at the wing is nice, but his ratings cut a check his bum ass production doesn’t cash.
2027 183 Jazz Sign SF Josh Giddey for $25,000,000 over 5 years.
Grade: C+. The pious men of the Mormon Church out west clearly thought Giddey’s sterling character was pristine enough to give him a long term deal. Fun ratings, but that is a lotta years for a guy who averages 1:2 stock to TO and is about as relevant as a fart in the air conditioner on offense.
2027 183 Rockets Sign PF John Collins for $21,000,000 over 3 years.
Grade: A. Nice deal, nice fit for Houston. Collins get to the line a ton and makes his FTs, and he’s an excellent rebounder. I like the number for what he does.
2027 183 Pistons Sign SF OG Anunoby for $11,000,000 over 2 years.
Grade: B. Some good positional defense without much offense to be found, OG can play some moderately useful minutes in a pinch and hang on to the ball.
2027 183 Hawks Sign C Luke Kornet for $4,500,000 over one year.
Grade: A-. After losing Luke Kornet in real life, I’m glad to say Heimer was able to bring him home in SLN. Still the owner of a tidy 3:1 stock to TO and a nice shot funnel to the backcourt, Kornet is nice value on an MLE.
