This draft is so blah I didn't come up with a creative name for the 2013 Mock Draft

Post by jwoo »

Finally have some time so here I present you with a More Detailed Than Usual mock draft. This is a sort fun class in the sense that it will be really hard to predict after the first few names — it's a really flat draft I think — so while this draft sucked IRL I do think there are nice value opportunities throughout. Just not many stars. Let's fast forward to next week!!!

***

1. Indiana Pacers: Giannis Antetokounmpo

Can we start sending some of these guys West please? Good god. Tonger and Steven are in locked a deathmatch for top lottery odds, and Giannis looks like he's going to make things pretty interesting for whoever wins the lotto. Think the main question is just what position he ends up best suited for: is he an SF with incredible strength who dominates everyone but doesn't shoot threes? Is he a natural PF who's good at everything? Will he rebound and block shots well enough to moonlight at center? All good questions that will be fun to see as he bulks up each season.

2. New Jersey Nets: Rudy Gobert

Unless you're a team that's already loaded up at center, Gobert seems like the prize at No. 2, with excellent base ratings and a super high floor as a rock-solid defensive big who is going to maybe be a little frustrating on offense. Not too much to say here other than it'll be really annoying trying to score on Gobert and Anthony Davis, lol.

3. San Antonio Spurs: CJ McCollum

Jordo has great young wings and it's a bummer for him that CJ can't play PG, but I do think there's good upside here and potential for CJ to thrive as a backup 1/2, which will help mitigate some of the shitty starting PG minutes IT and Pat Bev are currently putting in for the Spurs. Or he could be a big baller and move CJ to PG and camp them handles...

4. Los Angeles Lakers: Anthony Bennett

I think Bennett kinda has to go top five in a draft like this — he's a bit flawed but he likely has 90-100 potential and would be a useful upside throw and supercamp candidate for any team that has the ability to long-view tank. One of those team is definitely the Lakers, who are starting from absolute scratch but will have a clear cap sheet and an easy pathway into being one of the most formidable losers for the next few seasons. I'd love Bennett to be good just for the bit and he makes sense considering the lack of clear high-end potential prospects in this class.

5. Cleveland Cavaliers: Victor Oladipo

I almost gave the Cavs a center, but I think Mantypas probably should just go BPA and take a center at 12, since that seems to be where the depth is in this class. Oladipo fits in with Harrison Barnes and would give Cleveland a solid base of wing defenders going into next season when they will presumably be front of the line for Jokic and Embiid. Oladipo looks like a high-floor starting wing and could be Kerry Kittles-ish at his ceiling.

6. Minnesota Timberwolves: Nerlens Noel

Pankin needs another big so I can see him going that direction here. Curious to see how Nerlens and Steven Adams get valued relative to one another. I think Nerlens' stock potential is probably immense, so unless Adams has a super OP stip (which is a fun draft subplot if anyone scouts him) I would think he's the better upside play of the two, but I think they're both solid prospects. Nerlens is quicker and might be able to play PF so I like him more as a fit than Adams for Minnesota next to Greg Monroe.

7. Toronto Raptors: Steven Adams

I love Steven Adams IRL and I need a big, so this would be cool. He seems like he'll be useful out of the box but probably lacks the upside of some other guys in this draft. I don't really care if people know that I like him lol. Could see him getting looks higher than this due to his stip, which would then send someone else good down to me, so whatever.

8. Vancouver Grizzlies (via LAC): Shabazz Muhammad

Josh got a pretty solid pick out of his 1000 RP investment (wish I had taken Bobby up on this offer in hindsight). Shabazz seems to have good upside and his lack of defense is helped by his good rebounding. Seems like a better fit for balanced-focused teams but also a nice value pick in the mid to late lottery due to the lack of true small forwards in this draft. Grizz can go BPA here and Shabazz seems like a good developmental player.

9. Miami Heat: Dewayne Dedmon

This is where the draft gets a little interesting and eye-of-the beholder. The Heat need bigs to complement their star perimeter trio and this feels like a potential spot to grab one (or maybe trade back and take one a little later). Dewayntris Dedamontidis has the fourth highest scouted potential for centers and what appears to be a good amount of shooting ability, which makes him an interesting fit as a glue guy on an outside-oriented team. There are like four or five centers you can argue for in this range, which is fun.

10. Sacramento Kings (via ATL): Michael Carter-Williams

MCW looks like one of the draft's true wild-card players: he might be more John Wall than Jeff McInnis due to what appear to be copious turnovers, but he also could be one of the top defensive point guards in the league — or a good enough defender to survive at the two in the right context if you can fix his offense a bit. Feels like a guy Jesse will figure out how to fix, and based on the unique upside he probably shouldn't fall too far out of the Top 10.

11. Golden State Warriors: Glen Rice Jr.

The Grain Demigod is here!!! Taking applications for nicknames. Have to be some good ones. Basmati Jordan is lighting up the NDL right now and has to be viewed as a lotto-level talent I think, also factoring in the NDL GAINZ he's going to get. I think it's a clear advantage being able to see his production, and while he probably has zero positional defense, he's too fun for me to envision him falling too far.

12. Cleveland Cavaliers (via BOS): Gorgui Dieng

Here's a center for the Cavs. Dieng looks like a reliable butt to me and might be able to play some minutes immediately. Not a sexy pick but a nice guy to have around. Cavs can address a need here I suppose.

13. Dallas Mavericks: Robert Covington

Bob Covington looks like a very solid 3-and-D player with a useful floor, sort of like Jae Crowder was last year. As always, it's hard to know how much these types of guys are going to shoot, but he's the type of guy who can help a lot of teams, and I could see him going higher than this or maybe even a tad bit lower depending on how things fall. He's probably a better fit on a team that's trying to win and has scorers already, than one rebuilding from scratch.

14. New Jersey Nets (via DET): Otto Porter Jr.

This might be farther than OPJ actually falls but he seems like an excellent NDL stash if he gets to this range (he may not due to the "good upside"). Steven has a ton of picks in this draft and probably can't use them all, but this is a good spot for an upside swing and there are some tasty NDL names lying around.

15. Sacramento Kings (via CHA): Andre Roberson

If Roberson can avoid the diminished gains (B- inside cuts it close), his tantalizing defense makes him a pretty interesting development pick. Risky, sure, but fun. Seems like a good fit in Stockton to me.

16. Washington Bullets: Tim Hardaway Jr.

At some point the Bullets need to better optimize their perimeter bench minutes and THJ looks like a pretty solid scorer who won't do anything else. Could definitely go higher than this if someone can stomach the lack of defense. It's a wing-heavy draft. But this feels like a decent fit.

17. Sacramento Kings: Daniel Theis

Theis feels like another solid if unsexy rotational big. There are a lot of those guys in this class. Kings may not use all three of their picks, but I gave them a wing and a PG so I'm going frontcourt at this spot. Safe pick, probably.

18. Dallas Mavericks (via UTA): Dennis Schroder

How do you say Jonny Flynn in German?

19. Minnesota Timberwolves (via VAN): Seth Curry

Is there some Willie Green in Seth Curry? No idea but he's another very high-floor role player who should be able to help somebody. The Wolves need to get James Harden more help (my god I just looked and Keyon Dooling is bad), so yeah, get your parka ready Seth, I guess.

20. Toronto Raptors (via NY): Ben McLemore

Just realized Ben McLemore despite being a notorious bust conspicuously has no notes, so now I'm sure someone will take him before me. But whatever. He probably has good potential but will also probably be underwhelming is my guess. Welcome to Raptors 905 Ben.

21 Los Angeles Lakers (via MIL): Mason Plumlee

Mason has had a really solid NBA career all things considered and can go to the NDL, and he can score, so I could see him lighting it up down there. Maybe I should have given him to myself at 20 actually. SMH.

22. Toronto Raptors (via ORL): Mike Muscala

Muscala's draft notes look better than his ratings do (C rebounding is tough) and he looks like a solid role player type of stash. Sort of like Jon Leuer. On second thought maybe I don't need him. Whatever.

23. New Jersey Nets (via CHI): Kelly Olynyk

Olynyk is kind of built like Meyers Leonard but with more offense and less defense. I think it's pretty hard to win with bigs that can't defend but the overall build of this guy is kind of interesting. Maybe on the Nets - who in this instance would have Gobert and Anthony Davis - Olynyk could be a nice third big with lots of defensive cover around him.

24. Minnesota Timberwolves (via PHX): Alex Len

Alex Len is the first center listed in draft notes so like, someone has to pick him in the first round right? I once saw him absolutely destroy Northwestern when he was at Maryland. His scouted potential is actually pretty good.

25 New Jersey Nets (via SEA): Matthew Dellavedova

How do Steven and Pankin collectively own like a third of the first-round picks??? I gave Steven Delly and Olynyk just to ensure his team maximizes their potential to injure opponents and produce interesting content.

26. New Jersey Nets (via POR): Kentavious Caldwell-Pope

Whoops, I forgot about KCP. He's actually had a really solid career IRL and I think he got done dirty with just C base defense. Steven can take him with one of his 47 picks. Kentavious Caldwell Hoop or Kentavious Caldwell Poop? @SWAMP STEVEN

27. Atlanta Hawks (via DEN): Trey Burke

It's not a super interesting PG draft but Burke has decent notes and seems like he has a good base to be useful. Could be a readymade backup for the Hawks.

28. Minnesota Timberwolves (via PHI): James Ennis

Feels like a boring 3-and-D guy. James Posey vibes. Except I wasted a pick like 12 spots earlier on Posey in 2001 or whatever year that was.

29. Vancouver Grizzlies (via HOU): Facundo Campazzo

No idea if he'll be anything in SLN but man this guy was fun as hell to watch IRL, Euroleague legend and Short King, can join his buddy Nocioni in Vancouver I guess.

Am I the only one who think Gobert is getting way too overvalued?
