Mervalytics 2014 (h/t WEDDING BOY, Congrats SONICK)

Post by Merv »

Here we are once again, it's my annual list of analytical data that informs my tanking behavior by telling me who to avoid!

Free Throw Rate (ALL)
Image
The Manimal comes in at #1 on the FTr list, getting to the line about 3/5 shots. That's why he had to be banished, this level of effectiveness in fouling out opponents was not allowed in the tank! Free agent Amare Stoudemire is probably the highest ranked, high usage, mildly decent FT shooting big at 17th overall. Some other notable high USG guys above 75%, Blake Griffin, Al Jefferson, and Pau Gasol in the top 30. It has generally looked to me that FTr is more player fixed than driven by play style. If you like fouling out opponents, take a gander!

Free Throw Rate (Back Court)

I've always found it interesting to know which guards and wings are getting to the line at a crazy rate. Bigs are understandable but someone like TMac getting there roughly 2/5 shots and hitting 83% is a massive value add that is generally hidden amongst his stat line. Honestly, I wish Julius Randle was a bit higher on the list. Jabari Parker debuting at 21 is super promising for a likely one way player. Rondo comes in as the highest PG, ahead of Derrick Rose, Shaun Livingston, and Ray Felton.

3 Point Attempt Rate
Image
Well this starts to explain how Reece Gaines was so solid for Jesse this year. If he's going to shoot 3's more often than anyone else and convert them at a 41.3% rate, that'll bode well. Demolition Man surprises me at 6. I personally enjoy the non-IRL shooting guys like DWade and Brandon Jennings in the top 15. SLN is a special developmental ground!

Total Rebounding Percentage (ALL)
Image
As you'd expect, Gregory Oden leads the way. I didn't expect to see Primoz so high, perhaps there is some life left in him and he's worth a flier! Royce White at 22 is probably the highest, how tf did he end up here. Thomas Robinson at 10 is pretty interesting as he looks like an interesting prospect who should be a real rebounding specialist for someone.

Total Rebounding Percentage (Back Court)

Ever wonder which wings and guards board the best? RIP KG, it was fun while it lasted. Going out on top like a real G. Most of the guys near the top play as 3/4 type guys, but wow what an advantage LeBron is at the 1! Shabazz coming in at 30 looks like a super interesting rebounding project at SG for someone to get when Tyler trades him this week. Jordan Hamilton was a sick sleeper for Joe and has appeared on a few boards so far.

Block Percentage
Image
Borschtfart always leads the way. RIP Oberto going out at #4. Serge Ibaka, all block no board. Larry Sanders looks pretty fun, would definitely play rock, paper, scissors for him. Andrew Bynum comes in at 13 before heading into FA, expect to see him garner some MLEs. Imagine if Bynum got a good supercamp! Mr. Thinson is 31st with 4.7%, hope to see that take off in the near future. Another thing to notice, there's no real wings on here other than TMac, especially younger guys. If that were to happen, they'd instantly become super super valuable.

Turnover Percentage Descending
Image
On the bright side, Nerlens never has the ball? Some real butter finger bigs up here. Marcus Smart terrifies me but has a handles camp inbound. Victor Oladipo looks to be the highest non-PG/C at 13.0%. I think we'll start to see a lot more perimeter players higher on these lists as it seems today's NBA throws the ball around like hot potato.

Turnover Percentage Ascending
Image
Melo, king of "I shoot if I feel leather". Shaun Livingston at 2 is pretty wild. Honestly, pretty insane for all 3 PGs in the top 10, Shaun, Kyrie, and Jamal. Rip Hamilton looks like an amazing MLE candidate. Clint should sign him for $7m and flip him because Rip is still useful. Damion James gets to the line and doesn't turn it over, miss him. Oberto really walked away as a pretty perfect big, insane blocks and no turnovers.

Usage Percentage
Image
Impressive that 9 different guys use at least 1/3 of their team's possessions. Kyrie is so filthy, hope I get lucky in FA. I feel like USG% tells you a lot about a guy's volume and a team's shot funnel. The Nuggets having Melo, Monta, and Steph add up to a number greater than 1 is pretty sick. You can almost guarantee one of those 3 is shooting the ball, well done Kip.

STOCK:TO

Think we have a new high at 8.286, beating Borschtfart's 7 or so. Congrats Mr. Outlaw, SLN Champ! Josh Howard checks in as the highest wing, plus he only resigns for a million. I never should've moved him, sad.
