Another FA positional power rankings - 2017 FA class
We are back!
I’m back in a plane so we are gonna try to bang out another one of these. Same as last time, we are gonna power rank the positions available in free agency. This year seems to be a much more fun free agency, with a mix of vets and young guns available.
5th best Small Forwards
Top guys - Ersan Illyasova, Ryan Anderson, Andre Roberson, Gerald Wallace, Yi Jianlian
Opposite of last year when the wings were the top of the top. There are no single stars available at the small forward position, and not many two way guys available either, other than Ersan, who is good and a fantastic rebounding SF. Joe Ingles is an interesting potential MLE guy. Vet min candidates include Hedo, Markieff morris, and everyone’s favorite French man, Boris Diaw
4th best - Power forwards
Top guys - Blake Griffin (really the only top guy)
This group is similar to the small forward group, except it has a bonafide stud in Blake Griffin who will command a max contract. However, no other PF in this group is quite good. David Lee and Boozer are probably the next best guys, and will get like an MLE. Other intriguing guys include Psycho T, Thomas Robinson, Serge Ibaka, and maybe Mike Muscala, who I can’t imagine would get a ton of dough
3rd best - Point Guards
Top guys - Mike Conley, MCW, Trey Burke, Jeremy Lin, Goran Dragic
Pretty solid group here. Mike Conley is the big name vet that will command some top dollar for his two way play. The other guys listed are a bit more interesting because each has their flaw that will prevent them from getting a max, so will be interesting to see who goes after them and at what price. Look for Jeremy Lin and MCW to be in different teams as both their previous owners don’t have the cap to retain them. Other interesting guys in this group include Jeff Teague, Isiah Thomas, ray felton, Matt delladova, and Lyle Lowry (who I still believe in and his big ole butt)
2nd best - shooting guard
Top guys - Victor Oladipo, Tim Hardaway Jr, Shabazz Muhammad, CJ McCollum
I give this group the slight edge over the point guard group due to the amount of young studs available, as well as the depth of the group. Though the above guys should all command close to a rookie max, there are some other interesting vets in this crew. The vet crew includes former Cav great Ben Gordon, 3&D god Thabo Sefalosha, Dahtay Jones, Sasha Pavlovic, and Iman shumpert. There are also some intriguing young guys that aren’t to the caliber of the top guys, but should definetly have interest around the league. That list includes Glen Rice Jr, KCP, and Ben McLemore. This group is strong but not as strong as the top group.
1st best group - Centers
Top guys - Chris Bosh, Eddy Curry, Kendrick Perkins, Kwame Brown, definitely nobody that played for the cavaliers
This group has it all. Two way stars in Bosh and Eddy Curry, elite big butts on the rebounding and defensive end in Kendrick Perkins, Gortat, and Kwame Brown, and available young guys that are already good (Nerlens (mega sigh) and Vucevic) or have the potential to be good (Steven Adams and Tarik Black. Just a lot of solid ass centers available. The other big names that stand out to me are Jason Thompson, robin Lopez, Spencer Hawes, Hasheem Thabeet, and Dejuan Blair. A plethora of butts.
Now we get to everyone’s favorite segment, creating a starting five if free agents that played for the Washington Wizards IRL. I’ll try not to use folks from the last free agency.
Starting Point Guard - Trey Burke - yeah he played for the wizards pretty briefly in an attempt to comeback after a poor showing with the Jazz. And he wasn’t too successful there.
Starting shooting guard - KCP and Glen Rice Jr. I was going to just give with KCP, but I feel like him and Glen Rice Jr are very similar, and might even give the nod to Glen Rice Jr for being able to rebound the basketball. KCP had an interesting stint with the wizards. He was part of the disastrous Russell Westbrook trade to the lakers, and he was really solid for us. We traded him to the nuggets for very little and he got another ring. Good for him. Glen Rice Jr had a lot of promise IRL. He was the summer league MVP and had a lot of natural talent, great shooter and incredible athlete. He had too much off the court baggage to stay in the NBA.
Starting Small Forward - Devin Robinson - you might be asking , WHO?!? Well i said I wasn’t going to use people I’ve already used so that rules out my king Garrett Temple, Yi Jianlian and Markieff Morris. Devin Robinson played for the wizards briefly, mostly their G league team, the Washington Go Go. He was a lanky SF/PF that could jump out of the gym, Florida guy. Couldn’t do much else.
Starting Power Forward - I’m going to cheat and go Nene because he played PF for my Zards alongside Emeka Okafor and Marcin Gortat. He was great in the post, a solid defender, and a good vet presence. Everyone remembers when he put Joakim Noah in a headlock during that playoff series in 2014 against the bulls. Great times.
Starting Center - Marcin “the Polish Hammer” Gortat. This guy fucking rocks. A pick and roll god. Spoon fed layups from John Wall. They named a fucking screen after this guy. While getting drunk with my friends, I’d argue he’s a top 10 center in the league when he played with John. I’ll stand on that take. Clint even got me a Gortat T-shirt jersey which I wear to this day (shoutout to you Clint you G)!
Well that’s all i got, happy hunting folks
