20 Years of SLN: The Best and Worst Individual Seasons in History
Spurred by JWoo’s call for content, I wanted to apply the metrics I shared in my prior Possession Advantage and Efficiency article to the SLN history books. Maybe some names here - beyond the obvious ones like Dirk, Manu, and Diop, though all of them feature prominently - that will drive some nostalgia.

As a reminder, the metrics as defined are:
- Possessions: FGA+TO
- Possession Efficiency: points per 36 / (FGA per 36 + TO per 36)
- Possession Advantage: STOCK per 36 + Rebounding Advantage per 36 - TO per 36.

Per your feedback, I’m also making two additions/changes:
- For Possession Advantage, I’ve weighted Steals at 1.0, Blocks at 0.75, and Rebounds at 0.5.
- I’ve added my compound metric ADV, which combines the above into a single measure of "how efficient is the player at generating and spending possessions" and is defined as:
Points per 36 / (FGA + STOCK per 36 + Rebounding Advantage per 36 - TO per 36), with the steals/blocks/rebounds weightings as above.

We’ll look at:
- The Buckets - Top 40 BEST high-volume possession efficiency seasons in history (>20 possessions/game)
- The Tank Commanders - Top 40 WORST high-volume possession efficiency seasons in history (>15 possessions/game)
- The Magnetic Butts - Top 40 BEST PF/C possession advantage seasons in history
- The Butterfingers - Top 40 WORST PF/C possession advantage seasons in history
- Top 10 PG Seasons in history by ADV
- Top 10 SG Seasons in history by ADV
- Top 10 SF Seasons in history by ADV
- Top 20 PF/C Seasons in history by ADV
- The Garbage Cans - The Top 40 WORST seasons of all time

All players with <1000 minutes in the season are excluded.

Some names that pop out to me:
- Dirk, Manu, and Diop, the triple GOATs
- Boban historic season
- Sheed was that good?
- Gordon Giricek 2003 outlier season?
- Brandon Knight was terrible. At least for Joe's sake Tobias ended up being disappointing too
- Jay Williams really turned it around
- Primoz best SRP of all time
- If their perimeter D isn't shit, moving a PF to SF is a huge advantage
- Blake Griffin has really turned it around from being a net negative possession anchor to a net positive
- Now I get the Jeff McGinnis hype
- Livingston still underrated
- MJ in the top 4 ADV SG seasons ever, must mean the metric works
- Scot Pollard?
