Redrafting the 2010-2017 drafts
Poverty Raptors are back with another get rich quick scheme: we're gonna redraft the 2010-2017 drafts, as you may have read in the title. Does that score me extra grading points for humor? Fuck yeah!
2010
10. Um, John Wall? (4th overall)
9. Greg Monroe (11th overall)
8. Larry Sanders (14th overall)
7. Paul George (1st overall)
6. Eric Bledsoe (16th overall)
5. Jeremy Lin (5th overall)
4. Gordon Hayward (6th overall)
3. Hassan Whiteside (3rd overall)
2. DeMarcus Cousins (2nd overall)
1. Boban (23rd overall)
In hindsight this draft was booty cheeks, no pun intended (in Ontario we refer to them as the hindquarters, get it?) - it's so underwhelming that John Wall somehow still made my list of top 10 players because most of the other guys in the draft are out of the league. This draft had several excellent big men, with Boban, DeMarcus and Whiteside all having really great careers as three of the dominant centers of this era. It also had *Joe voice* absolute superstar Gordon Hayward, who doesn't play defense but is pretty good. I gave Gordon Hayward a +5 inside freebie or something once that really helped him, we're the best. I think Paul George is still pretty decent despite being crazy underwhelming, I think Bledsoe gets the nod by a hair in a redraft but it's close. Jeremy Lin was drafted in the right spot! Anyway, this was a pretty forgettable class overall.
2011
10. Kenneth Faried (13th overall)
9. Tristan Thompson (17th overall)
8. Jonas Valanciunas (12th overall)
7. Marcus Morris (7th overall)
6. Bismack Biyombo (16th overall)
5. Kemba Walker (5th overalll)
4. Klay Thompson (4th overall)
3. Jimmy Butler (3rd overall)
2. Kawhi Leonard (1st overall)
1. Kyrie Irving (2nd overall)
This draft had a ton of star power — and name-brand guys — all of whom panned out to various extents. Remember when many of us thought Kyrie wasn't the obvious clear-cut No. 1 player? Yeah. Kawhi has had a nice late-career uptick and got the nod for me by a hair over Butler and Thompson, all of those guys are good, Kemba is a bit underrated at this point, and then it's a steep dropoff into the role player zone. There were some good role players though, including Biyombo who's really solid, Marcus Morris (still not sure exactly how the twin stip worked but Markieff got the short end), and solid bigs like Jonas, Tristan and my personal favorite Faried. Decent draft overall with a league-defining player in Kyrie.
2012
10. Khris Middleton (5th overall)
9. Draymond Green (7th overall)
8. John Henson (15th overall)
7. Harrison Barnes (6th overall)
6. Damian Lillard (2nd overall)
5. Bradley Beal (3rd overall)
4. Jeremy Lamb (14th overall)
3. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (8th overall)
2. Andre Drummond (4th overall)
1. Anthony Davis (1st overall)
Another draft that's kinda fallen flat over time. AD hasn't quite been what we expected. Andre Drummond turned out to be a correct answer (I do wonder what would have happened had Miami taken him and not Dame). Lillard and Beal both hit mid-level development outcomes with the Heat and never became stars. Beal later got traded for Kevin Durant. I sent Jeremy Lamb to the NDL and then gave up on him way too early, as it turned out. MKG also wound up being pretty darn useful. And then you have guys like Barnes, Draymond, Middleton, who are still in the league but have done pretty much nothing of note. John Henson is a butt. Forgettable draft!
2013
10. Steven Adams (4th overall)
9. Dewayne Dedmon (18th overall)
8. CJ McCollum (6th overall)
7. Tim Hardaway Jr (9th overall)
6. Shabazz Muhammad (10th overall)
5. Rudy Gobert (2nd overall)
4. Victor Oladipo (3rd overall)
3. Nerlens Noel (5th overall)
2. Otto Porter Jr. (14th overall)
1. Giannis Antetokounmpo (1st overall)
This draft is pretty fun to look back at, actually. Giannis was obvious, but guys like Porter and Nerlens panned out big time (Porter benefitting from NDL time, too). Most of the top picks have had real careers. Oladipo became good. Gobert is fine. The Shabazz/THJ/CJ group is kind of similar but have all earned second contracts of substance. Steven Adams' stip makes him still top 10 for me but he didn't quite hit the level of ratings many hoped (including me), he definitely has 99 strength though. I still feel dumb that I didn't trade with Tyler on draft day BEFORE the 4th pick was on the clock because I scouted Nerlens and wanted him to fall to me at 6, lol. This was a bad draft historically, but turned out to be pretty fun and interesting, even if there was only one superstar, as expected.
2014
10. Jusuf Nurkic (14th overall)
9. Langston Galloway (17th overall)
8. Spencer Dinwiddie (15th overall)
7. Julius Randle (9th overall)
6. Jabari Parker (7th overall)
5. Clint Capela (6th overall)
4. Zach LaVine (4th overall)
3. Aaron Gordon (11th overall)
2. Nikola Jokic (2nd overall)
1. Joel Embiid (1st overall)
This turned out to be a really cool draft. I think at the time we kinda knew that too? Embiid-Jokic is a debate, I think Jokic's stip only being able to play center gives Embiid the edge, but Jokic has a title much like in real life, so whatever. Both guys have panned out in cool ways. Aaron Gordon got all the freebies I had from the frenzy that one year, which certainly helped him a ton, but I don't think I'm being biased or facetious ranking him third. LaVine is awesome but his turnovers are a little icky. I think those two guys can be debated in either direction. It's cool that they've both transcended just being in the dunk contest lol. Capela has been really solid. Randle and Parker is a fun debate, they're both very rich. And then you have nice PGs like Dinwiddie and Galloway correctly drafted in the teens. I stuck Nurkic at 10th, he's got nice ratings and probably could stand to play more, but he's also making like 3x as much money as he should be now. But overall this draft holds up pretty well. I determined Andrew Wiggins didn't make the cut.
2015
'
10. Jahlil Okafor!!! (16th overall)
9. Kevon Looney (17th overall)
8. Kelly Oubre (21st overall)
7. D'Angelo Russell (5th overall)
6. Justise Winslow (8th overall)
5. Karl-Anthony Towns (1st overall)
4. Tyus Jones (12th overall)
3. Kristaps Porzingis (3rd overall)
2. Myles Turner (4th overall)
1. Devin Booker (2nd overall)
This class has an argument as one of the best in recent history. Some legit debate for who the best player in the class is/will be in the end. Book has become basically Ray Allen, Myles Turner is a two-way machine, Porzingis is really good, and Tyus Jones is somehow better than KAT (although I do wonder what KAT would look like on a team without Giannis that maybe catered more to him?) After that there were still a lot of really nice role players, including Winslow, Oubre, Russell who is like the Brandon Jennings of this decade, Kevon Looney who is a fucking asshole, and apparently based on this season, Big Jah!!! A lot of value was found outside the top 10. A ton! Honorable mention Montrezl Harrell. It tells you something that I made this list and couldn't even get my guy Jerian Grant (the 37th pick?) on the rankings. That's journalistic objectivity, bitches. (NOTE: ALGORITHM DETECTS HUMOR - JWOO GETS 100 RP BONUS)
2016
10. Buddy Hield (16th overall)
9. Marquese Chriss (8th overall)
8. Gary Payton Jr. (27th overall)
7. Ben Simmons (5th overall)
6. Taurean Prince (24th overall)
5. Brandon Ingram (4th overall)
4. Fred Van Vleet (14th overall)
3. Domantas Sabonis (3rd overall)
2. Jaylen Brown (1st overall)
1. Jamal Murray (2nd overall)
It's great that this draft based off of my hilariously bad takes from 2016 has turned out to be...one of the best in SLN history? A lot of really fun players didn't make my Top 10, including Zubac, Derrick Jones, Caruso, Ellenson (?), Poeltl, Thon Maker, Denzel Valentine (coming up from the NDL finally), it's legit become a really good class. Jamal Murray's giant leap pushes him to the 1 spot, but Jaylen Brown and Sabonis are both really great. FVV has been underrated but will probably shine as the franchise PG in Sacramento or wherever he gets traded to after this. Prince has become pretty sweet with his freebies, I almost put him ahead of Ingram, those two guys are pretty close. Simmons is cool, if weird. GPII is awesome as a role guy, so is Chriss, Buddy Hield is breaking out, man what a great draft. Almost like I came up with it.
2017
10. Chris Boucher (18th overall)
9. Lonzo Ball (7th overall)
8. Bam Adebayo (6th overall)
7. Jayson Tatum (1st overall)
6. Lauri Markkanen (4th overall)
5. De'Aaron Fox (10th overall)
4. Semi Ojeleye (36th overall)
3. Markelle Fultz (8th overall)
2. Jonathan Isaac (2nd overall)
1. Donovan Mitchell (3rd overall)
This is probably still a bit soon to rank these guys. But holy balls is there a ton of star power in this class. Fultz, Mitchell and Isaac can be argued different ways. Semi is kinda right there. Fox is sweet. Lauri is on his way. It's a bit eye of the beholder with those six, and then a group of guys in Tatum, Bam and Lonzo who are probably on the cusp of being better in a couple seasons? I think Mitchell is so stupidly good even with the turnovers that he gets the nod by a hair over *uncamped* Jonathan Isaac (look out it's an election year!!!). Fultz is a franchise PG already with room to grow. Semi is fucking insane and it's criminal that nobody with cap space thought to sign him, I'm gonna keep saying this forever lol. And then I think upside-wise, Fox is right there, he scores more than Fultz, rebounds less, more TOs, yeah. Markkanen hasn't shown the level of efficiency yet to rank him higher than this, but I assume he gets there. Tatum and Bam, we'll see, they aren't especially amazing yet but I'm just leaving room for potential to take over for the time being. Lonzo is a great game manager and I think Boucher is pretty cool. Plenty of room for other guys to still break through onto this Top 10, too. Could this be one of the best drafts ever? Might be at least five stars here already...
