Who has the best division??? Day 70 check
Posted: October 28th, 2024, 11:33 am
Hey Y'all - I am mighty RP poor and bored in a class I am taking, so I thought I'd quickly put something pretty easy but informative together. I took a look at the base statistics and point differentials to try to answer the time old question. Who has the best division. And my results were honestly, not very shocking at all. Let's take a look at each division.
Atlantic -
Division PPG Dif RPG Dif APG Dif SPG Dif BPG Dif TO Dif Win %
Atlantic Avg -0.886 -0.929 -0.314 -0.157 0.214 0.400 53.11%
Atlantic Median -0.600 -0.400 -0.500 0.300 1.500 0.300 54.90%
Atlantic Min -16.800 -6.000 -3.000 -2.500 -5.100 -1.800 25.60%
Atlantic Max 10.300 6.300 1.300 1.400 3.600 4.000 75.00%
The Atlantic has its mix of big ole tankers (Bullets and Heat) and juggernauts (Celtics and Knicks) with some competitive teams in between (Magic, 76ers, and Nets). Unfortunately for the division as a whole, the tankers are tanking so hard that its bringing the overall differential down pretty significantly. I rank this the third best division out of 4. A blocky division that does not rebound the ball well. Still has a positive win % so maybe some regression there (looking at you 76ers).
Central -
Division PPG Dif RPG Dif APG Dif SPG Dif BPG Dif TO Dif Win %
Central Avg 0.575 0.338 -0.050 0.163 0.213 -0.188 55.35%
Central Median 0.750 0.000 -0.350 0.200 0.600 -0.150 52.75%
Central Min -6.200 -3.900 -1.700 -1.800 -2.800 -2.400 41.20%
Central Max 7.500 5.000 3.000 1.900 2.000 2.000 75.00%
The most competitive division in terms of lack of tankers (pistons joined the picture late when they got their picks back) or absolute world beaters (though the hawks are close), the central has a positive point differential and is quite stocky. I rank this the second best division in the league (pain was hoping for # 1 as a Central truther).
Midwest
Division PPG Dif RPG Dif APG Dif SPG Dif BPG Dif TO Dif Win %
Midwest Avg -2.371 -0.686 0.186 -0.629 -0.243 0.857 43.83%
Midwest Median -4.600 -1.100 0.700 -0.800 -0.500 0.600 37.50%
Midwest Min -11.900 -6.800 -5.500 -2.200 -1.800 -1.200 22.00%
Midwest Max 7.400 6.300 4.400 0.900 2.500 3.300 70.20%
Woof - the Midwest really put the MID back into the west. Everything across the board is a negative except for assists and turnover differential. Lot of care takers here, Tyus Jones putting this division on his back. But just lots of teams retooling (Nuggets, Rockets, Twolves, Mavs), Spurs with a weird year so far, with the only two great teams here being the Grizz and the Jazz. Worst division goes to the Midwest, or should we just call it the Badwest.
Pacific
Division PPG Dif RPG Dif APG Dif SPG Dif BPG Dif TO Dif Win %
Pacific Avg 2.614 1.200 0.229 0.543 -0.171 -1.000 55.61%
Pacific Median 2.600 1.500 0.100 1.300 0.000 -1.500 55.60%
Pacific Min -0.900 -4.200 -2.900 -1.700 -2.400 -2.500 46.70%
Pacific Max 7.300 7.200 3.300 1.900 1.100 1.000 66.70%
That is what I call a fun balanced division. Look at that sweet tight range of Min to Max. No one with worse than a -1 point differential. These teams score, defend, rebound, may not get stocks, but are a force to be reckoned with and likely beat each other up a bit too much. All teams are fighting for a playoff spot, but only 5-6 will be able to get in - with the Grizz and Jazz a lock and the Spurs likely to make it too given their Midwestern opponents. This is easily the best division in the league this year. and the most fun. Many year tankers like the Sonics, Warriors, and trailblazers just going for it, with the perennial GMOTY candidates of the Kings and the Suns still at the top.
Bonus round - which conference is the best - east vs west
Conference PPG Dif RPG Dif APG Dif SPG Dif BPG Dif TO Dif Win %
East Avg -0.107 -0.253 -0.173 0.013 0.213 0.087 54.31%
East Median 0.100 -0.400 -0.500 0.300 1.300 -0.100 54.50%
East Min -16.800 -6.000 -3.000 -2.500 -5.100 -2.400 25.60%
East Max 10.300 6.300 3.000 1.900 3.600 4.000 75.00%
West Avg 0.121 0.257 0.207 -0.043 -0.207 -0.071 49.72%
West Median 0.350 1.450 0.400 -0.350 -0.200 -0.050 50.05%
West Min -11.900 -6.800 -5.500 -2.200 -2.400 -2.500 22.00%
West Max 7.400 7.200 4.400 1.900 2.500 3.300 70.20%
This one really truly pains me. So far its the west by point differential. Maybe its because they get to play the midwest so many times??? IDK.
Thanks for reading, please debate below. And apologies for the spacing. Could not figure that one out to save my life.
