2011 Free Agency Primer (Re-signings noted)

Post by Merv »

I’m bored on a cross country flight so why not take a peek ahead to some re-signings and free agency. This could be a seismic offseason for a lot of franchises depending on how their re-signings go.

In Need of Friendly Re-Signings
1. Houston Rockets
2. Phoenix Suns
3. Seattle Supersonics
4. Orlando Magic
5. Milwaukee Bucks

Ready to Roll with Cap Space
1. Boston Celtics
2. Miami Heat
3. Minnesota Timberwolves
4. Denver Nuggets
5. LA Clippers
6. New Jersey Nets

Big Butts who will Re-sign Cheap but are Super Valuable Otherwise
1. DeSagana Diop
2. Samuel Dalembert
3. Joakim Noah
4. Ben Wallace
► Show Spoiler
5. Chris Mihm
HM: Keon Clark, Adonal Foyle, Jonathan Bender

I think those of us with cap space would love to see one of the top 3 in particular hit UFA. But it just seems way more likely these guys will offer to resign for some stupid below market deal because they don’t shoot a lot. In a truly free market, Diop might be worth 15m per year and would get flipped for a couple firsts.

Big Butts who will get Paid
1. Greg Oden
2. Eddie Griffin
3. Eddy Curry
4. Kwame Brown
5. Tyson Chandler
HM: Elton Brand, Jermaine O’Neal, Kendrick Perkins, Kenyon Martin, Emeka Okafor

This was a pretty tough list. I think there’s a lot of really good 4s/5s available this offseason. There will be some pretty massive contracts doled out this summer to some big butts. I find it unlikely any of these guys offer a cheap re-sign and will all be pretty valuable on the post signing trade market for tankers.

Wings! Who Wants Wings!
1. Brandon Roy
2. Dahntay Jones
3. Josh Smith
4. Tayshaun Prince
5. Antawn Jamison
HM: Michael Redd, Corey Maggette, Cuttino Mobley, Yi Jianlian, Josh Childress, Carlos Delfino

Not that many A tier wings will be on the market but some pretty nice B tier guys in Roy, Jones, and co. We’ve even got wings for different offensive styles like Jamison and Mobley. Someone in this group will make it to day 5 as an MLE.

Point Gods
1. Jamal Crawford
2. Mike Conley
3. Carlos Arroyo
4. Baron Davis
5. Stephon Marbury
HM: Keyon Dooling, Jason Terry

It won’t be the best PG market ever but multi champion Jamal Crawford is likely to be a UFA and Mike Conley probably won’t get tagged unless Tyler wants to chance it on Kevin Love. Arroyo is probably the only other surefire starter on this group as the rest are more nice 6th men and emergency starters.

Rotation Players
1. Corey Maggette
2. Brendan Haywood
3. Paul Millsap
4. Travis Outlaw
5. Keyon Dooling

This will likely be the MLE or just above MLE class. Nice players who will be on the high side of their position groupings for someone coming off the bench.

Do You Run an Inside or Balanced Offense?
1. Eddy Curry
2. Eddie Griffin
3. Dahntay Jones
4. Zach Randolph
5. Antawn Jamison

Gotta be a fun year to want to run inside or balanced and have some cap space. Gigantic re-signing period ahead for the Rockets as Jamison and Curry are up for grabs. Dahntay is a guy I think would thrive in an inside offense but has always been in outside offenses.

Maybe Outside is your Fancy
1. Jamal Crawford
2. Cuttino Mobley
► Show Spoiler
3. Michael Redd
4. Rudy Fernandez
5. Carlos Arroyo

We got some shooters! Crawford is a 1 man outside wrecking crew. Mobley will shoot until he keels over. Rudy could be a future Cuttino with some favorable TCs. Arroyo is diet Crawford.

Are You a Stocky Fellow?
1. DeSagana Diop
2. Kwame Brown
3. Tyson Chandler
4. Emeka Okafor
5. Samuel Dalembert

Feels like a repeat of the bigs grouping but there are just a lot of stocky bigs out there. Even the stealiest wing can’t compare!

What are RFA Tags anyway?
1. Kevin Durant
2. Greg Oden
3. Mike Conley
4. Joakim Noah
5. Brandon Roy

As you’ll see, two Suns have made the list…😬. Otherwise KD is an automatic RFA tag, Derek was very fortunate for LMA choosing to stay. Oden should be an automatic RFA tag but RB will probably just not login to SLN during FA. Finally, Brandon Roy is still RFA eligible after Jesse’s extension. He’s a key piece to Seattle and could add some trade value on the right contract.
