RE-SIGNINGS ANALYSIS: CENTRAL DIVISION

Was taking a look at the resignings in my division, so figured I'd write about it. I stuck to more notable players here. Don't worry, I'm not turning this into four articles in order to game the system, this took me too long to do 4x lmfao.

Hawks

Resignings:

Tyreke Evans
(12.5M x 6y, 10%)
Hawks Accept
Grade: B-
Tyreke is a solid player, but he's only scoring 22 points on a team scoring 111 PPG, with a negative stock:TO. You have to hope for improvement across the board if he's going to be making almost $19M in year six. You get to keep your 7th overall pick without any fuss though.

Snubs: N/A (KMart & JRich don't have birds)

Hornets

Resignings:

Yao Ming
(11.8M x 5y, 10%)
Hornets Accept
Grade: A
Yao is still a gamewrecker - scoring an efficient 25ppg with 13.6 boards - and here you get him for much less than the max. If he falls off he falls off, but this is a no-brainer to keep him until he retires.

Elton Brand
(10.8M / 11.9M)
Hornets TBD
Grade: B
Brand's per 36 this season as backup big: 17.4 PPG, 12.6 RPG, 4 BPG/1 SPG, 1.8 TOPG, .44/.70/.00
I think Brand is good but overpaid. He was 14th on Big Butts, but he takes a lot of inefficient shots. Jburns has been able to make the salary work with his current roster, so why not run it back. Yao/Primoz/Brand is always tough to face.

Josh Howard
(2.6M)
Hornets Accept
Grade: A
Howard put up solid starter minutes: 20-7 with a 2:1 stock:TO. Retaining him for less than $3M is just good business.

Snubs: N/A

Bulls

Resignings:

Brendan Haywood
(1M)
Bulls Accept
Grade: A
Haywood puts up reliable 3rd big numbers. He was 57th on Big Butts and doesn't take many shots. You love to get those guys for the minimum.

Raul Lopez
(1M)
Bulls Accept
Grade: A
I'm sure this is starting to feel like grade inflation, but it's hard to give less than an A for minimum salary on a guy that performs admirably and keeps the Bulls alive whenever TP gets hurt.

Snubs (Odom doesn't have birds):

Rashad McCants
McCants is a key part of this Bulls squad - he's a great all around player that got All-League 3rd Team / All-Defensive 2nd Team nods. It would be a tough loss for Chicago if he left in FA.

Cavaliers

Resignings:

Tim Duncan
(17.2M)
Cavs TBD
Grade: B
At age 37, he could absolutely die in TC or retire. For now, he's still putting up stats good for 25th on Big Butts. He was making $26,250,000 last season, so this is significantly less money. Mantypas may want to find a suitor before accepting this offer if he plans on tanking again.

Chris Kaman
(6.1M x 3y, 10%)
Cavs TBD
Grade: C-
Our first bad grade! Kaman was 70th on Big Butts AND he takes a lot of inefficient shots. Compared to Haywood on the minimum, this is a tough pill to swallow. The fact that he has B+/B+ Df/Reb ratings is the only thing keeping this out of the D range for me.

Snubs: N/A

Pistons

Resignings:

Solomon Jones
(10M)
Pistons Decline
Grade: D+
Solomon Jones is right below our friend Chris Kaman on the Big Butts list at 71st. He's not very good despite having flat A defense, so RB is definitely right to decline this greedy ass offer.

JR Smith
(5.9M x 4y, 10%)
Pistons Accept
Grade: A
What a year for JR Smith. After being unceremoniously removed from the Knicks, he still made the playoffs in Detroit. With B/A scoring and B defense, this is the type of resigning offer you always hope for. He'll be a useful player and an easy trade piece in negotiations.

Snubs:

DeSagana Diop
This one hurts. A core piece of the Sonics trade, Lasagna Plop was 11th on Big Butts and is in the mold of player that resigns for cheap. I'm very interested to see what he goes for in FA.

Pacers

Not much quality on this roster. A bunch of guys offered to resign for super cheap (Haslem, Belinelli, Green, Beaubois) but Tonger declined all. I'm guessing he's planning on turning those guys into larger expiring contracts for trades. At least I hope so!

Bucks

Resignings:

Joel Przybilla
(1M)
Bucks Accept
Grade: A
Don't love giving myself an A, but this is literally the same contract as Haywood and Przybilla was above Haywood on the Big Butts list.

Gilbert Arenas
(16M x 5y, 10%)
Bucks Accept
Grade: B+
To be honest I wasn't quite sure what I was going to do with the PG spot coming into this offseason. I collected a bunch of PGs with birds and hoped for the best. Leandro Barbosa and Patty Mills both offered to resign for cheap alongside Arenas taking less than the max, so I got very lucky. It might hurt paying Gilbert $22M at age 36, but I'd rather just take this deal than test him on the open market.

Snubs: N/A

Raptors

Similar story to Indiana. A bunch of guys offered to resign (Blair, Evans, Foye, Diamantidis, Blake) but jwoo declined all. Again, I'm guessing he's planning on turning some of those guys into contracts for trades.

Snubs:

Ricky Rubio
Bummer for Toronto! Rubio looks like he could have a bright future. Fortunately for jwoo, he has an available RFA tag, which he promptly used.

Ya Plop not resigning was a mega disappointment and Jones got way too aggressive asking for $10mm. Work to do on the Pistons roster this offseason
