About the NDL

Post by ashes »

So how does it work?

Each GM will have a corresponding NDL team (mostly all based on real life G League affiliates with a few exceptions). These teams will have 12 scrubs on them. You can have a maximum of 4 prospects delegated to your NDL affiliate (I will outline what prospects qualify for the NDL). All prospects in the NDL will be starters and options. Outside of that, the team will be run by your incompetent NDL coach aka the computer. Every in-game month (20 days) will result in an increase in your prospects stats based on their position and performance. There will also be additional rewards for the player if they receive awards in the NDL. At the end of the NDL season, those stat increases will be aggregated and normalized (this essentially means the increases your player sees in the NDL will be greater than the end result, however more increases to stats in the NDL results in better performance and awards). If and when you recall your prospect from his NDL assignment, those stat increases will be applied, and your shiny new prospect will be transferred back to the main SLN file. There will be a limit to which players can be sent to the NDL, how many times they can be recalled and sent back, etc.

Who can go?

Prospects must meet the following requirements (or limitations more accurately) to be eligible for the NDL:

-Have 4 or less years of experience when sent
-Not selected in the lottery (there may be exceptions to this, ie foreign players)
-May not have two letter grade ratings of B or higher
-May not have a single letter grade rating of A or higher
-Must not have averaged 25+mpg in the SLN already
-Have not been sent down to the NDL twice already
-Cannot be one-year minimum players
-Undrafted players may end up going to the NDL on their own...

How do the stat increases work?

As I touched on before, players sent to the NDL will increase in ratings on a monthly (in-game) basis. These increases will help them earn more overall rewards but remember that these will be their NDL ratings. You may recall a player at any time, but there are obvious benefits for them remaining in the NDL for extended periods.

-A player with 0-1 years of experience that spends a full season in the NDL will earn a potential boost. Rookies (0 year exp) will earn a flat +5 potential. Sophomores (1 year exp) will earn an RNG determined +3-8 potential.
-The following awards during the NDL season will translate into a greater rating increase when the player is recalled: Rookie/Player of the Month, Rookie of the Year, All-Star Selection, All-League 2nd Team, All-League 3rd Team, All-Defensive 2nd Team, All-Rookie 1st Team, All-Rookie 2nd Team
-The following awards during the NDL season will translate into points towards ratings that the GM can assign when the player is recalled (these do not go towards camps purchased with RP): Most Valuable Player, Defensive Player of the Year, All-League 1st Team, All-Defensive 1st Team

Any other general logistics?

-Delegation/Recall periods: Pre-TC, SLN Day 60
-A player may remain in the NDL as long as you want but will stop receiving rating increases after his 3rd year in the NDL.
-Players delegated to the NDL will not take up a roster space in the SLN (aka the player is recorded and removed from the file). However, their salary will remain. It will be placed in Cut Salary and also separately recorded for if and when they return.
-Players return with their original contract on whichever year they are currently on. If their contract has expired while in the NDL, you will have the option of offering them a 3 year x 4.5M contract. No more, no less.
-Players are grandfathered in once they are sent into the NDL. For example, this means you may send a player with 4 years of experience and keep him there for however long you want. However, he may not return to the NDL once recalled. This also applies to if you feel like his ratings may be over the initial restrictions as well.
-You must make roster space for returning players. If you do not have the space, they will not return.

Okay but anything else?

The NDL is a fun way to add value to lesser desirable young players and perhaps turn them into something. Can it make someone into a stud? Perhaps! But more importantly, at the minimum, it should provide you the chance to develop valuable rotation guys that wouldn't normally be anything. It will also offer fun, additional depth to trade negotiations, such as trading the rights to players in the NDL.

Hey if I can only send 4 players at a time, what about those other scrubs on my NDL affiliate? What if they blow up?

-Qualifying Offer: You may extend a qualifying offer to a non-delegated player on your NDL affiliated team. The cost for this is 300 RP (non-refundable) and your MLE (ie you may not offer an MLE that season). The contract will be an MLE that is eligible for extension. If you have cap space, you may extend any salary offer you like (within your cap space). After Day 60, the contract becomes guaranteed, and the player will be considered under contract and take up one of your NDL designated slots.
-Poaching Period: Two periods - Offseason Free Agency Period and Day 60. There will be a thread creating announcing the start of the poaching periods. You may PM offers for any non-designated slot NDL players around the league, regardless of team affiliate. If you are over the cap, you may offer the MLE or LLE. If you are under the cap, you may offer any salary within your cap space range that you like. Teams that have qualifying offers extended to an offered player will match any contract equal or lower than that of their qualifying offers. If the offer is higher than the qualifying offer, a formula using the following metrics will be used to determine the signing: Starting Salary, # of Years, Total Salary, Greed/Loyalty/Play for Winner ratings, Team SLN Win Rating. Poached players will immediately be recalled to the SLN.

2005 Changes
Re-Signings
Re-Signings will now be a 4.5/4.95/5.4M Qualifying Offer and an 8/9.2/10.58M Qualifying Offer for players in diminished gains.

These are both still very affordable/bargain contracts for the quality of player you use them on. However, being Qualifying Offers, it means those players will be poachable during FA Period. I think this encourages GMs not to leave guys that are too good for the NDL down too long, while still allowing for quality players to be retaining relatively easily. Just not the obvious borderline star type guys, like Marko Jaric. This last offseason was the final for the previous method, and there will be no grandfathering.

Diminished Gains Players
Players in diminished gains will no longer receive GM choice rewards. This means no more stashing obvious OP guys that will clear the awards and get 2-4 GM Choice points, nullifying the diminished gains.

Furthermore, players that win NDL MVP or DPOY will no longer be eligible to receive GM choice points in subsequent seasons, regardless of diminished gains status.

Players that spend two seasons in the NDL with diminished gains must be recalled the third season.

Delegation
Players with stipulations will not be eligible for the NDL unless that stipulation specifically pertains to the NDL (ie Peja). The reasoning behind this is simple. Many stipulations I give encourage some sort of trial/effort on the GM's part or some amount of randomness. Simply stashing a guy away that's been given this extra care when building them sort of undermines that facet of the game I'm building, so I'm just going to get ahead of the issue and not allow it.
