The 10 most interesting BALLERS* on the trade market
Been really busy lately but need to get back to the content grind in order to keep this team well fed so here we go.
Two sims until the trade deadline and things are pretty quiet. Come on fellas. We can grease the wheels!!!
Here are 10 players I found notable for one reason or the other who I am pretty sure are available. Only two of them are on my team lol.
For the sake of getting deals done, if anyone has anyone they think should be on here, comment below and maybe we can make some stuff happen in this dead ass league smh!!!
Kawhi Leonard / Orlando
Interesting fits: Golden State, Minnesota, Phoenix
Kawhi is one of the best players in the league, he's on an expiring deal, and he's going to probably be worth whatever his next deal is (probably somewhere in the neighborhood of what Paul George is currently getting). Somewhere along the way (and after getting a potential boost), Kawhi turned into real Kawhi and has a pretty dazzling set of ratings and stats.
Leonard is probably the best player on the market — he is 29 with a good chunk of prime years left — but the odds are that someone will have to pay up to pry him out of Orlando and also be comfortable with the contract risk. I don't know if he moves, but I do know that there are a lot of decent Western Conference teams that would look a lot more interesting with him at the 3.
Aaron Gordon / Toronto
Interesting fits: Orlando, Milwaukee, Golden State, Denver, Minnesota, Washington, Dallas
Did I only write this article in order to write about Aaron Gordon? The answer is actually no, so I'm not going to write much about him. Having said that, his age, versatile skillset, contract and trajectory make him pretty attractive if I do say so myself. (I say so).
Cory Joseph / Milwaukee
Interesting fits: Memphis, Portland, Washington
Cory Jo has put together one of the more notable contract years in recent SLN history, turning in a monster offensive campaign (albeit with 2.8 TOs a game) at age 30, while making just $5.2 million. Basically any team can acquire his contract. The Bucks have just decided to block him, a smart move after adding Hassan Whiteside as an addition for next season, when Derek will also get Otto Porter back and be in position to move up in the East.
The interesting question here is what Joseph is worth on the market — he will come with bird rights and a chance to re-sign, but also may wind up costing a lot to retain if he hits the open market. To justify paying up for him (or at least at a price that would incentivize the Bucks to deal), a team presumably needs to have him in their plans for the long term. The other issue is that there are a lot of solid point guards around the league, as well as a lot of teams that don't seem to care much about being buyers right now. If he does move, there's a somewhat short list of teams that make sense.
DeAndre Jordan / Philadelphia
Interesting fits: Chicago, Orlando, LA Lakers, Memphis
Jordan is clearly the best big on the market — he's essentially the Ben Wallace of this era, including the fact that he's making more money than is ideal at his current age. He's still worth something, clearly, but a team has to be willing to take on a lot of dollars. He's an elite rebounder and defender, and there aren't too many of those guys left, but there is risk associated with taking on that deal. Will the Sixers value the flexibility enough to settle for a lesser price? The nice part about Jordan is he's a valid counterpunch against a guy like Joel Embiid in a playoff series, and not many players fit that criteria. It would be interesting to see a team shed a different unwanted contract and pay the Sixers to swap — the tricky piece here is that Philly doesn't have its first round pick in 2022.
Kevin Love / San Antonio
Interesting fits: Memphis, Portland, Philadelphia
Kevin Love has been kinda bad this season and makes a lot of money, but he can ostensibly be had for free it seems, making this an interesting gamble. A team probably needs to clean some other unwanted money to get him in order to justify it - could be a fit for a team with salary to move that can make a reasonably appealing offer to the Spurs. Maybe he has another good year or two in the tank.
Rudy Gay / Brooklyn
Interesting fits: Charlotte, Minnesota, Milwaukee, Phoenix
We've reached the expiring veteran section of the article. Gay certainly has value on his expiring deal even after getting swapped for Kemba Walker, but some contender would need to cobble together the right contracts and then incentivize Steven to deal. There are some teams that could use a wing upgrade, for sure, even if Gay winds up being more of a rental at his age.
Shaun Livingston / San Antonio
Interesting fits: Memphis, Portland, Toronto
Kind of like Gay but at point guard. Not many teams need PGs at this stage of the season, and those that do might have a hard time matching salary, but Livingston is still pretty useful and could add value somewhere on his expiring. The Spurs seem ready to rebuild, so he's probably attainable.
Dejounte Murray / Houston
Interesting fits: Memphis, Portland, Toronto, Philadelphia
Dejounte has been pretty good this season, but he's also a horrible fit in Houston due to the fact Russ can't move off of point guard. Murray's turnovers at the 2 are certainly a concern, but he's cost controlled, can play PG in theory, and isn't very old. Could the Rockets attach him to say, Ryan Anderson or Siakam as a way to get off some bad money? That type of deal might be preferable to moving Murray for a pick. Again, you kinda have to need a point guard to want him. He's been efficient this year so maybe some reclamation potential?
Denzel Valentine / Toronto
Interesting fits: Anywhere : )
Valentine is super efficient, on the midlevel, and is a solid rebounder and defender to help compensate for his occasional game with a lot of turnovers. Kind of an ideal backup 1-2-3 if you ask me (you didn't but it's my article). Could be a great addition especially for teams at any stage of their life cycle, or navigating tricky cap sheets thanks to his versatility and age.
Derrick White / Miami
Interesting fits: Idk
White on his expiring is kind of a fun flier even after being demonstrably bad at times. The stocks he brings at guard are interesting. He's not as good as he as IRL. But he could be a reclamation project for someone, depending on what the price is to get him off the Heat, who are tanking. I don't know what it would take, but maybe some team trying to add young talent could find a way to make him useful.
