Every 2nd Round pick Jwoo has Ever Made

Post by Matt »

Derek recently made a comment saying that "it isn't a Jwoo trade if there isn't a 2RP going his way". We've all (well, not me, because we've never done a trade, but w/e i'm projecting) been close to a deal with Jwoo and seen him send that last ditch effort to squeeze maximum value out of you: "throw me two seconds and you got a deal".

But is this strategy paying dividends for the Raptors faithful in Toronto? Jwoo is clearly the most prolific volume shooter when it comes to 2RPs, but how many of them have panned out into real players? I took a look through every 2RP Jwoo ever made, both his own and ones he traded for, and put career stats in for those who had real SLN careers. This list also does not include 9 2RPs that Jwoo rescinded over the years.

Antonio Daniels

Career Stats per 36 (including Stock:TO ratio before FG%):

17.14 4.46 6.86 1.37 0.17 2.74 0.56 45.00% 83.40% 38.50%

Psychologists will often look to a patient's childhood to understand the sources of tension and trauma that may be informing future behavior. I think we can look to Antonio Daniels to understand why Jwoo is constantly searching for that next hit of 2RP success. Daniels was as promising a 2RP as we've seen early in his career, but quickly lost motivation as soon as Jwoo paid him. At the end of his career, he scored 17 points per 36, at a decent clip of 45%, but didn't do anything else well - he lost possessions through turnovers and a lack of rebounding and never lived up to his contract or the hype.

Pat Garrity
Lee Nailon
Malik Allen

Career Stats per 36 (including Stock:TO ratio before FG%):
12.58 11.59 2.34 0.62 3.70 1.23 3.50 41.50% 77.60% 0.00%

Malik Allen is probably the best 2RP to go through Toronto. with a 3.5 career stock to TO ratio, he did the dirty work for the Raptors for a few seasons before spending most of his career in San Antonio. He shot it a bit more than you'd like for a big with poor efficiency, but he was at least decent from the line. He was certainly a steal in the second round and one of the best 2RPs Jwoo has made.

Joe Crispin
David Andersen
Earl Barron
Fran Vasquez
Ike Diogu
Chris Copeland
Ryan Hollins
Bobby Brown
Daequan Cook
Omer Asik
Luigi Datome (I no like-a da BBL, i shoota da Lavar)

Joe Ingles
Career Stats per 36 (including Stock:TO ratio before FG%):
19.03 7.27 3.36 1.31 0.19 2.24 0.67 44.90% 78.50% 40.10%

Ingles has been....ok I guess in SLN? He showed some promise in the NDL, but has been extremely average in the big leagues, not really doing anything significantly above average. He's a good rebounder, but turns it over enough to negate that without mustering much in the way of stocks. He scores it at decent volume, but isn't efficient enough for that to help your team all that much...I guess he turned into a decent 3rd string wing? More than you can say for most of the 2RPs on this list.

Alonzo Gee
Jeremy Evans
Nemanja Bjelica
Jon Diebler
Deandre Liggins
Charles Jenkins
Scott Machado
James Ennis
Doug McDermott
Jerian Grant

15.83 5.51 8.44 1.64 0.23 1.76 1.07 45.00% 81.50% 40.00%

Jerian Grant is the most recent hope for a Raptors 2RP to be useful in SLN - a white light in a sea of Jon Dieblers and Scott Machados. He started for a Raptors team that won 58 games, which is the best thing you can say about him that season - he has basically molded into a game manager who won't lose you possessions and plays solid defense, but with little to nothing to offer on the offensive end. With some random point guard TC bumps, he could jump Malik Allen for best Raptors 2RP of all time, but for now I'd say Allen still holds the torch.

Damien Jones
Josh Jackson
Jevon Carter
Zhaire Smith
Eric Paschall
Dylan Windler
Paul Reed
Sam Merrill

So there you have it - after 34 picks (and 9 rescinded 2RPs, so 43 total 2RPs available), 4 guys have created a legitimate SLN career (with some more recent picks still in the NDL hoping to make a name for themselves). I'm not sure what the main takeaway from this exercise should be - I guess just toss in the 2RP when he asks for it? I treat 2RPs as if they have legit 0 value, and based on this, they clearly have greater than 0 value...although not by much. And you could maybe argue that the fact that Antonio Daniels swindling Jwoo into giving him a good contract may outweigh the positive value gained from the other guys on this list all things considered...idk. You all can decide for yourselves!

Doug McDermott was one of the best NDL players ever and Bobby let him die there after I sent him to LAC in the first Cousins trade

Fran Vazquez was the fourth big on my championship team
