Unsung hero of each team

Post by Wes »

Unsung hero's from each team! We’ll take a look at which guys aren’t getting as much praise on the boards, but still helping teams win games (even if they don’t want it). Going straight down the current playoff standings.

Hawks
Sung heros: KD, Tyreke, DJ
Unsung: Gary Payton II
After LeBron at the helm last year the Hawks switched to a more defensive focused game manager PG. He picks up possessions with his nearly 2:1 stock to to ratio and when he does shoot its mighty efficient slashing 49/43/80. Funneling even more shots to Reke and the Durantula. The east is as top heavy as it’s ever been and the Hawks are still in a league of their own. Payton II has certainly helped their cause.

Magic
Sung heros: Gordon, Kawhi, Book
Unsung: Steph Curry
While he may not be quite the polarizing player he is in real life he’s still really freaking good. Spaces the floor for his other teammates with his elite 3pt shooting. Good steals for someone with only C+ defense. Kinda sad he hasn’t got to A+ outside, can always hope for some late PG TC magic.

Hornets
Sung heros: Murray, Semi, Clarkson
Unsung: Jonathan Isaac
With Clarkson rise to stardom this season Isaac has flown a little more under radar for this Hornets squad. Possibly the best possession hogger in the league? 11.3 rebounds, 4.3 stocks to only .8 TOs! Only 24 and showing B potential its scary to think he can still get better. He doesn’t shoot much so his lower end FG% isn’t a big deal. He doesn’t shoot much 3’s (about 1 a game) but his last few seasons he’s putting up 43, 49, 47, and 56 precent from 3!! Probably small sample size but still looks pretty in the stat line.

Bulls
Sung heros: Luke, Drose
Unsung: Arsalan Kazemi
Theres a few unsung options on this team (Noel, Sanders, Otto) but we landed on Kazemi. He’s averaging the most rebounds per 36 on the team and the least TOs per 36 (for guys who actually get minutes). When he does shoot it’s efficient and he gets to the free throw line at a very high rate relative to his shots attempted. Shoutout to Merv for telling me to give him some minutes and not let him die in the SLN abyss.

Celtics
Sung heros: Harden, Boucher
Unsung: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
We’re only a few teams in and I can already see I have a type, stocky and rebound heavy PFs. MKG is another guy who stuffs the stat sheet with high steals for a big, good blocks, and low TOs. Having MKG (and Boucher) this season has increased the Celtics point differential by 2 so far compared to last season. Can’t wait for the C’s to get a friendly Looney resigning so they can add more to an already dominant team.

Knicks
Sung heros: Embiid, Turner, Okgoie
Unsung: Tyus Jones
What a pickup for the Knicks last season ending a revolving door of slightly above average PGs (Galloway, Bayless, Burke). Tyus is just entering his prime at 25 years old and gets a lot steals, doesn’t turn it over much for a 25ppg PG, and shoots very efficiently slashing 49/45/93. The Tyus, Okogie, Turner, Embiied core will be a pain in the butt for the east for years to come.

Pacers
Sung heros: Drummond, Oden, Sabonis
Unsung: De’Aaron Fox
Retaining Fox was massive for Indiana. He didn’t mess around and offered the absolute max of 12.5mil/12.5% raises/7 years. A superstar PG and still only 24 years old. Leading the league in steals, manageable TOs and shooting efficiently with room to improve since he’s slightly below last years averages. Preseason this team was heralded as the cream of the crop in the league. In unexpected mediocre start to the season has been surprising. The Boucher MLE poach def hurt and he’s had to turn to an aging Rudy Gay to play the 3. Once Tong gets enough data points in his spreadsheet I’m sure this team will get rolling.

Bullets
Sung heros: Ant, Shabazz, AD
Unsung: Both Jordans (Hill and Hamilton)
Recent additions from the Clips have filled underperforming positions. Jordan Hill has stepped in as the starting 4 from Reid. The same rebounding but more stocks and less turnovers. Hamilton has allowed Shabazz to slot back to the 2 where his rebounding is a huge advantage. Hamilton is sporting excellent shooting splits and rebounding with manageable TOs. We’ve picked up about 3 points in our team differential since these guys made it to DC.

Bucks
Sung heros: Shai, Mitchell
Unsung: Dillon Brooks
Brooks is about 80-85% of Otto, who he was traded for, but costs half as much. He’s slashing an efficient 46/42/83 from the floor and is stock to to neutral. His rebounding leaves a little to be desired from the 3 but with guys like Whiteside, Williams, Robinson, and Cauley-Stein in the front court Brooks’ below average rebounding is manageable.

Cavs
Sung heros: LaVine, Winslow, Russell, Boogie
Unsung: Thon Maker
Thons a fun young player who at 24 is already sporting A-/B+ D/Reb ratings. He’s played a mix of the 4/5 this season and gets to the line a solid amount. He barely turns it over and picks up a couple blocks a game. His rebounding (and I’m assuming strength) needs to improve in TC for him to become a top tier big but he’s a fun player so far early in his career.

Pistons
Sung heros: Hali, Jennings
Unsung: Andrew Bynum
Bynum is getting up there in age but still swats the hell outta the ball. His rebounding is still there averaging about 13 per 36. The TOs are starting to balloon but manageable for the other stats he’s giving you. He’s been a useful player for awhile despite his unassuming letter grades.

Raptors
Sung heros: Poole, Okoro
Unsung: LaMarcus Aldridge
Despite getting paid the GDP of a small country LMA is still putting up useful stat lines. About 11.5 rebounds per 36 and an efficient 15ppg. Low turnovers like he’s been his entire career. If he wasn’t so highly paid Jwoo would have flipped him long ago. Oh well guess he’ll potentially waste his last year on the trying to tank Raptors.

76ers
Sung heros: LeBron
Unsung: Spencer Hawes
One of Davids favorite all-time players is still alive and playing half decent ball. Fun fact, Davids team name in our fantasy basketball league was the DemoralizHawes for like 5 years in a row. The format was super unique, there were only 4 of us and instead of a buy-in whoever finished last had to buy the group Fogo De Chao. I think David had to buy like 4/5 of the years his team was named after good ol Spencer. Over 10 rebounds per 36, nearly 2 blocks a game, and only .7 TOs. Still shooting efficiently, Spencer could be a decent 3rd/4th big for a contending team

Heat
Sung heros: Lillard
Unsung: Grayson Allen
While Allen is the dirtiest player in NCAA history, he’s sadly carved out a somewhat decent role for himself in SLN. He’s a pretty efficient shooter and is stock to TO positive. He’s played a mix of the 2 and 3 in south beach this season but his rebounds hurt him. Still sporting B scouted potential he has room to grow into a solid bench piece.

Nets
Sung heros: Zion, Ayton
Unsung: Devin Vassell
Vassell has played most of the year as the starting SG and is putting up very solid numbers for a second year player. 16 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.8 stocks to 1.8 TOs and an efficient split of 47/38/84. Vassell is one of the brighter spots of this Swampy lineup. He still has +8 camps to go along with A scounted potential, the future is bright for Devin.

Suns
Sung heros: Jokic, Rui, Bonga
Unsung: Blake Griffin
I feel like I haven’t read Blakes name once on the boards this year and kinda forgot he was still on this team. Overshadowed by Rui’s breakout campaign, Blake is still alive and playing great ball. Good rebounds, scoring, efficiency, and low TOs. He does everything you want out of a PF. He’s averaging the lowest TOs of his career outside his rookie year. The Suns front court is an absolute juggernaut. Tylers been switching up his DC a lot trying to figure out how to maximize his glut of bigs. Will be a nightmare for teams to try and matchup against in the playoffs.

Griz
Sung heros: Zinger
Unsung: Brandon Ingram
Another guy not getting a ton of love on the boards. This looks to be his breakout year. Major jumps in shooting percentages so far this year. He’s slashing 49/45/78, compared to his career averages of 46/39/84. Basically stock to TO neutral and average rebounding at the 3. If his scoring continues to improve, see slow developing SFs, then he’ll become a great player to have on nearly a flat $13mil contract.

Lakers
Sung heros: Kyrie, PG, Hayward (mostly sung by Georgie himself)
Unsung: CJ Miles
Remember when this guy was all league first team in 2016? Pepperidge farm remembers. At 34 years and F scouted potential this guy can still ball! Scoring the shit outta the rock with 48/46/89 shooting splits and sporting a positive stock to TO ratio. He’s been the Lakers backup 1/2/3 all year long and provides a nice efficient scoring punch off the bench.

Jazz
Sung heros: VanVleet, Marvin, Bell
Unsung: Derrick Jones Jr.
Derrick is such a fun player at the wing. Stock god with 2 steals and 2 blocks a game! Only a hair over 1 TO a game and he’s a plus rebounder at the wing. On a phenomenal deal at $8mil escalating about $1mil a year. His shooting is fine for someone who doesn’t chuck up too many shots. Jazz have 4 guys with flat A defense that’ve helped them allow the 4th least PPG this season.

Trail Blazers
Sung heros: Ellis, Barrett
Unsung: Rudy Gobert
Rudy’s a rim protecting machine averaging the 3rd most blocks in SLN this year. Some other GMs have the strong opinion that Whiteside is significantly better than Gobert but I’m still skeptical. Now that Gobert’s on a + contract (MLE extended) he’s a great value big. Rebounds can come to bigs late in their career and if that happens to Gobert he could become elite.

Warriors
Sung heros: Jrue, Dipo, Tatum
Unsung: Jabari Parker
Jabari’s only 26, I feel like he’s been in the league for awhile and expected him to be over 30. Shooting lights out from 3 to start the year at 46% and is a very good rebounder at small forward. Jabari and Tatum are a super fun pairing at the wing. With the Zubac pickup drastically improving the Warriors rebounding and team performance, watch out for the dubs making some noise in the Western conference playoffs.

Kings
Sung heros: Boban, Joseph
Unsung: Josh Hart
After signing quite a long deal Joshua got a little bit of hate on the boards. He’s a very good rebounding small forward, would love to know what his split of offensive vs defensive boards because he’s such a good off rebounder in real life. Boban and Hart are really the only good rebounders on this teams with Powell and Joseph being about average, yet they are still an above average rebounding team. Hart has A- defensive ratings so with only 1.2 steals his positional defense must be very good. If Hart can squeeze out some more development in TC he’ll be a great SF.

SuperSoNicks
Sung heros: Brown, Brunson, Lou
Unsung: Ben Simmons
Simmons has played this season as the backup 2/3/4/5 all year. Unclear where he’s getting the most minutes but he’s pest on defense and the boards. 4.2 stocks compared to only 1.1 TOs and over 11 rebounds per game is elite. Only downside is he gets to the line a lot and shoots very poorly from the stripe. One of the more unique supersubs the league has seen. He’s a super fun player!

Timberwolves
Sung heros: Giannis, KAT
Unsung: Jimmy Butler
Jimmy is quietly having a very good season. Averaging better than his career averages in FG%, 3pt%, rebounds, and TOs so far this year. Sadly his defense has regressed quicker then you’d like for only a 32 year old, it was at A- a few years ago and since has dropped to flat B. Still a great player at shooting guard he’s helping the Twolves fight to make the playoffs.

Spurs
Sung heros: Robinson, McCollum
Unsung: Ricky Rubio
Ricky’s been playing his tail off for the Spurs as they’ve waffled between tanking and going for it all season. He’s averaging a career best in rebounds and nearly a best in 3pt%. His steals are still among the best in SLN and his FG% is efficient. He’s been a bright spot in a team with no clear direction. After looking at him closer he may be a nice addition while Maxey continues to develop. *Writer quickly changes the Spurs unsung hero to Mikal Bridges*

Nuggets
Sung heros: Goga, Thybulle, Bagley III
Unsung: LiAngelo Ball
The best of the Ball brothers through their young career so far? Some are saying. Slashing a blistering 48/45/81 he’s been a bucket. He appears to be an average rebounder and will get you some steals. Nugz have a ton of young guys in the backcourt it’ll be fun to see who Kipke keeps and who he moves for guys at other positions. Looks like LiAngelo can wait a few years longer to start his rap career then IRL.

Clippers
Sung heros: Markelle Fultz
Unsung: Markelle Fultz
This guy has gotten some praise on the boards but not nearly enough. He may be the best PG in SLN. A very good rebounder at the point, amazing volume, super efficient, and low turnovers. This guy does it all. He’s also only 23!! And still showing B scouted potential. Will he sick around in LA or will Bobby move him for what could be the haul of the decade.

Rockets
Sung heros: Porter Jr
Unsung: Mike Conley
Mike’s still around and kicking at the ripe age of 34. Shooting an efficient 46/42/94 from the floor and collecting a couple steals each game. On only a MLE he could be a useful backup PG for a contending team or starter for a team needing PG help. Rebounding is about the only thing he doesn’t do at an average level. Look for Nolan to move Conley so he can bottom out from his current 4/5 projected draft pick.

Mavs
Sung heros: Young, Mobley
Unsung: Desmond Bane
The second year player Bane has put together a very nice start of the season for the Mavs. A lone star bright spot some are saying. Slashing 48/40/84 from the floor with 19 points, 6 rebounds, and a couple stocks. Banes looking very useful early in his career. Still with +8 in RCs to go it’ll be interesting to see if Hoff goes all-in on his offense or tried to curb the TOs. Bane’s on a nice trade to be an all-star SG sooner then later.
