Patrick Ewing
Patrick Ewing. Man, Myth, Legend. His time was short in the SLN but his impact will be felt for generations. A man unlike myself, his SLN began in humble beginnings, being slept on by all 28 other GMs, being selected after 45 other players. He was selected by the tanking Seattle SuperSonics in the second round of the creation draft. Having previously dedicated the franchise to the world's greatest tank job, Ewing knew his time in Seattle was short. This was a time before the First Age of the SLN, before the suns had risen, before the battles been waged. This was a time of Virgins. A time of caution. A time of fear (and sus gm leadership). Like all great realms, the origin of the first age of the SLN begins at Dawn, with the rising of the Suns. Ewing departed the desolate lands of Seattle’s fish market for the south, where he would be the first domino to fall in the trade winds of Nirvana. He moved for an insane 4 first round picks and helped spur the Suns onto a 35-1 start. Though all was not right in the realm of Apollo, for old men get injured. Ewing stood on the brink of his life long ambition, Nirvana!, but it was not meant to be in Phoenix, for the fell to MJ in 5. With the fate of Ewing, and the realm, in the hands of the Suns, Tyler pulled off this leagues most electric trade to date, sending Ewing to Join MVP Hakeem in Cali. He would create the leagues most formidable front court, and get 2 bonafide stars in return. From the Sun to the Golden State itself, Ewing would finally bask in the light of Nirvana. He would carry a Hakeem-less Kings over his hated rivals and complete his revenge in 5 games. As champagne popped and celebrations were a bound, Ewing snatched the microphone from the injured Hakeem (who was at the time praising Ewings efforts to carry them to greatness). Ewing then screams at the press “Everyone wondered what i would do if i didnt win… Guess you fucks shouldnt of wondered!! I FUCKING TOLD YOU WHO I WAS! I. AM. HIM! Im retired, fuck basketball.” To the surprise of all, Ewing left the stadium and drove off. He was not seen again for 69 days, until videos of him surfaced smoking blunts on the beach of Tahiti. A man as large as his height (huh?), his impact on the league wouldn't end there. For mere minutes (literally) after Jesses crowning achievement, Ewing said fuckem, and shortly after, Hakeem was traded to Toronto. In short, Ewing gave the Sonics 4 FRP, the Suns a historic opening (and finals appearance Sam Cassell, Barkley, and a FRP), gave the Kings a championship, and gave the Raptors a chance at Hakeem and a title of their own. Only a man such as this should be in the HOF, and therefore we grant him Honorary HOF status! We will also propose a new award for the league, “The Pewing” which is granted to the leagues most influential player of the season, redeemable for 500RP and a blumpkin at your nearest gas station.
Outside the SLN universe, Patrick Ewing was similarly a legend in the humanverse. A highly touted recruit originally hailing from Kingston, Jamaica—Patrick Ewing was a star for John Thompson II at Georgetown before being the first overall pick in the 1985 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks (frozen envelope anyone?) Over his 17-year career, 15 with the Knicks and one each with the Sonics and Magic, Ewing averaged 21 points and 10 rebounds per game while shooting 50% from the field and sending 2.5 shots back from where the came. He was a 11-time All-star who led his team to the play offs 14 times including every year of the 90s. His most successful playoff run was in the 1994 season when his Knicks lost in the NBA Finals to future SLN teammate Hakeem Olajuwon and the Houston Rockets.
Ewing was the 1986 NBA rookie of the Year, 1 time All NBA First Team, 6 time All NBA Second Team, 2 time Gold Medalist for Team USA, as well as a plethora of collegiate accolades. He, as of this writing, is the head basketball coach at his alma mater where he has amassed a 70-86 record and is sitting on a very hot seat.
Congrats to the big man!
