Diving into the SLN single-season record books

Post by jwoo »

What up everyone — trying to chip in some interesting content during this current drought of reading material and decided to delve into the league records and see what we find. (I found that several records are currently in the mix to be broken!)

THE RECORD BOOKS
Points per Game: 40.3 Dirk Nowitzki PF SuperSonics 2003
Rebounds per Game: 15.3 Shaquille O'Neal C Heat 2003
Assists per Game: 12.5 Jason Kidd PG Bucks 1999
Steals per Game: 3.2 Sam Cassell PG Clippers 2001
Blocks per Game: 4.2 Dwight Howard C Trail Blazers 2011
Turnovers per Game: 4.2 Steve Francis PG Lakers 2000
Field Goal %: .544 Marcus Fizer SF Pistons 2002
Free Throw %: .968 Allan Houston SG Clippers 2006
3 Point %: .526 Jon Barry SG Bullets 2003
Double Doubles: 74 Yao Ming C Hornets 2009
Triple Doubles: 28 LeBron James SF 76ers 2009

Points per game: Dirk, 40.3 points
Will it ever be broken? Maybe? Jamal Crawford is currently sniffing it but he's been injured so not sure if he'll qualify? I could see LeBron or KD challenging this number if optimized correctly. Maybe like, James Harden? Steph and Melo on separate teams? Anyway, that particular season was a tour de force from Dirk and culminated in the Sonics winning their first title. I don't think this is the most unbreakable record but it's definitely a tall task.

Rebounds per game: Shaq, 15.3 rebounds
Will it ever be broken? Probably not? I'm trying to think of who could do it and it's a short list. Peak Shaq was a singular force. Eddy Curry (Baby Shaq, lol) is currently leading the league with 14.5 boards and that isn't especially close. Does Andre Drummond get there? Dwight? Idk.

Assists per game: Jason Kidd, 12.5 assists
Will it ever be broken? Possibly. LeBron is currently at 11.8. Not sure how close anyone has gotten to this mark. Not that you necessarily want it anyway. You knew this was coming but I'm curious if Ricky Rubes can peak close to the 12 APG mark? Kemba is at 10.4 assists per game and Ricky is at 10.0, two young guys who could TC into more prolific passing. However, Kidd is still the best point guard hands down in league history so it's hard to imagine anyone getting on his level. You'd have to have a fully optimized very fast offense around a pass-first PG, at least.

Steals per game: Sam Big Balls Cassell, 3.2 steals
Will it ever be broken? Our friend Chris Paul is actually currently super close at 3.1 per game as we near midseason, so that's a fun record chase to monitor. Sam Cassell having the steals record is incredibly random and funny to me. He never averaged more than 1.6 in real life, upon investigation. Did you guys know Sam Cassell is 54 fucking years old IRL? The end awaits all of us.

Blocks per game: Dwight Howard, 4.2 blocks per game
Will it ever be broken? This is a pretty fresh — and fucking insane — record set by Mr. Howard last season. HOWEVER: Eddie Griffin is currently at 4.1 blocks per game, so we have another record chase afoot. Feels like Rudy Gobert could eventually contest this and Wemby will have 99 blocks so I'm going to say someone eventually eclipses it.

Turnovers per game: Steve Francis, 4.2 turnovers per game
Will it ever be broken? Lmao I hope not. Our only hope is some tank commander starting Milos Teodosic and running very fast for 82 games. Which honestly would be hilarious. Mr. Franchise may have this one to himself.

FG%: Marcus Fucking Fizer, 54%
Will it ever be broken? UNLIKELY! I believe Fizer set this record while Avu (RIP) was tanking and he somehow played enough games to qualify while making 54% of his baskets! A legend! Maybe Zion challenges it? It's just hard to shoot that percentage on volume. But hey, Bassy Telfair is at 55% right now so what do I know?

FT%: Allan Houston, 96.8%
Will it ever be broken? Willie Green is currently shooting 97% and so is Tony Parker. HERE IS THE THRILLING RECORD CHASE YOU NEEDED TO KNOW ABOUT FOLKS!!! Allan Houston was the man who broke the NDL, never forget.

3P%: Jon "Mr. Hawk" Barry, 52.6%
Will it ever be broken? Another Hawk, Nic Batum, is currently leading the league at 55% 3FG. Stop the count!!! Jon Barry has a plaque on the wall at Magic City. I do think this gets broken potentially but it's really hard to do it on high volume, so it's probably going to be someone we don't expect.

Double Doubles: Yao Ming, 74 (!)
Will it ever be broken? Well, league leaders doesn't track this, so I have no idea. But that seems like a lot of double doubles! 90% of Yao's games that year were double doubles. Good god. I feel like Dwight Howard can break this one or someone like that, but nobody is keeping track so one day we're just going to find out when we look at the records page lol.

Triple doubles: LeBron, 28
Will it ever be broken? Going to say yes because I think LeBron probably breaks it as long as he's starting at PG, lol. Nobody else really has a shot at this that I can think of.
