Offseason 2019 Primer - Teams biggest needs

Post by mantypas/CavsCzar »

Congrats to Hoff and the Mavs on winning a well deserved title and Wes and the Bullets for getting the #1 overall pick. With that, the offseason is upon us and is always one of the more exciting parts of the sim world. People try to re-haul rosters to aim to get better in the future, which sometimes means being horrid in the present. I’m going thru everyone’s rosters and noting every teams biggest needs, why, and how they can solve that issue. Away we go!

Boston Celtics

Franchise PG or Big – This team currently rosters 3 young guys, two SFs and a SG. All are good or on their way to be good. But none of them scream superstar. This team needs either a big or a point guard. This is a pretty easy fix. They get the second choice of Zion or Ja Morant (or Bol Bol if you value him that highly). They will still be poopy this year, but will have a bright future.

Miami Heat
Depends on the directions – if competing – depth at all levels. They are at 72.8 mil in cap and only have five players on the roster with no one in the NDL. If Scoops thinks the firepower of Melo, Klay and Dame can get them to the playoffs, I’d try to fill in the depth by using the MLE, LLE, vet mins, and potentially trading a bunch of picks with Bogut to break up his contract. I’m not sure I would do this. I’d rather do the second direction.

Young guys – Complete sell-off of everyone on this team except Bogut. Two 29 year olds and 3 35 year old smells disaster for the future. Why not just sell off your current guys except Bogut for young guys and picks and be very bad this season in a pretty stacked draft. Go backwards when all the tanking teams have to get better with higher draft picks?

New Jersey Nets
Big depth – This team has the stars in AD, Blake, and Kemba, they have the wing depth in BRoy, Rudy F, and the many young SGs. But they only have an old Darko and somehow Thomas Welsh as back up bigs. They need a good fourth big and emergency big. Maybe someone good can be snagged as an LLE target.

New York Knicks
Wings – With the big DWade retirement and Rudy Gay hitting FA, the only wings on this team are Myles Turner (who is somehow a “wing”) and the young and promising Josh Okogie. This won’t be enough to get them back at the top of the east, even with how dominant Joel Embiid is. I’d hit the FA market. They have 14 mil in cap. I’d try to resign Gay first, and if I strike out, go after a few other wings. A ton of solid guys out there, but not really any star wings.

Orlando Magic
Depth at Bigs and PG - I am assuming Merv will resign Booker here after he RFA-d him. This team is very solid all around and was one game away from the finals. I see him running it back and rounding out the edges with a backup PG and a solid backup big. Look out for some trades here, as Merv likes to run and gun, though plenty of good options with his MLE and LLE and will likely bring back the Stanimal

Philadelphia 76ers
PG (not paul george - He has finally done it, he has traded Lebron James. Great return and very fun trade from both parties. Dmo has a great starting 4 now with Monta, Yaro, LaMarcus, and Deandre. If he wants to be competitive, he will need the type of guard the Jazz had this season. Defensive first game manager. Think of a Pat Bev, MCW, Kyle Lowry type here from FA. I did not put youth down as I don’t think the big contracts he has remaining from last year are tradeable, and his trade with the Raptors signified to me that he still wants to compete, since he doesn’t have his picks back until 2023.

Washington Bullets –

True Franchise Player – The Bullets have a ton of good young guys but not anyone anybody would consider a future superstar. Maybe Trae gets there with his +10 handles. He has a chance to do right with the first overall pick. Will he take Ja and play him at the 2 or will he take Zion and let him dominate the paint? That is the question everyone will be asking.

Atlanta Hawks
Bring the band back – This team was a 2 point game away from making the title. An absolute powerhouse of a team with KD at the helm. They were able to resign Russ. Now they need to bring back Tyreke and big Perk and just try to run it back. Maybe get another wing player for depth. But I think that team had the pieces clearly.

Charlotte Hornets
Young Bigs – This team has a ton of young talent with Jonathan Issac, MPJ, and Jamal Murray, with Bogdan and Marcus being solid contributors. But other than Issac, they have no bigs. I can see Charlotte taking a swing on Bol Bol if he falls to them at 5, or trying to poach someone in FA like KAT.

Chicago Bulls
Youth in the Frontcourt – This team has a good mix of young talent and vets at all positions except the big butt category. Look for this team to continue to be aggressive to spite those that have his picks to upgrade his bigs. The youngest big they have is Larry Sanders at 31. And Rob Williams who is probably still a year away from being brought up from the NDL.

Cleveland Cavaliers
A starting caliber SF – We have all starting positions covered except for SF. DLo, Lavine, Noel, and Bosh. Based on Quady’s awesome SF article, and my sweet analytic ability, I can tell you that Jae Crowder is good, but is relatively mid, and probably shouldn’t start for a team with title aspirations. If these Cavs want to win, they need a good two way SF. IDK how they get that, but look out for them trying.

Detroit Pistons
Star Talent – As we saw from last years run from the Pistons, they have plenty of talent at each position but no bonafide star. They don’t have any cap space for FA and do not have their picks until 2023. They can either wait to see if Dejounte can develop into that star, or take a chance on someone older that would only cost a pick or two, someone like Melo or something.

Indiana Pacers
Depends on direction – If they want to continue to blow it up, go for the young guys and picks. They traded Jrue and Bosh and got solid returns. Drummond would bring in a haul. Would Deron Williams as well? If they want to run it back, they would need to get some big depth as they only have Drummond, Sabonis, and Nance (who hasn’t proved he is good yet).

Milwaukee Bucks –
Bigs – The bucks showed last year that, when healthy, they can probably compete for the eight seed. Now they are getting another TC out of Shai and Spida, they will likely want to gun for some starting caliber bigs that are better then Bebe and Cody Zeller, and see if that can nudge this very young team into the playoff hunt. They have the sixth pick and will have about 5 mil in cap space after. Look out for them using both their pick and cap space on bigs.

Toronto Raptors
Bigs – Well Jwoo has finally gotten Lebron at the expense of a former DPOY, Yaro the great, and some picks. Fuck them picks its Lebron. They also were unable to resign Looney. They will need to fill the gap by trying to resign big Loon, hoping for a good TC from Wendell Carter, and grabbing some other bigs via trades, MLEs, or LLEs.

Dallas Mavericks
Cap space – Congrats on the title Hoff. You’re prize? Being over the hard cap with only 7 people on the roster and no folks in the NDL. Look out for Hoff breaking up someone like Ersan, Eric Bledsoe, or Rudy Gobert into smaller pieces, or potentially just trading Harrell or Bledsoe for cap and value. Either way, he’s going to have to find a way to get rid of more than 2 mil in salary to be under the hard cap, then needs to find a way to fill out a roster.

Denver Nuggets
Superstar wing – tough luck from the Nuggets to lose out on a top 3 pick. They can try to solve this with the fourth pick, but I don’t think a superstar is being taken. Maybe Kevin Porter Jr becomes that guy? Or Bol Bol? But they have a ton of cap space, Id see them being a major player in the sign and trade game.

Houston Rockets
Depth at wing – they got the bigs covered with Sullinger and the deadman. They got Ryno Anderson and Lou will as the fireflames SF and PG. They need a shooting guard and they need depth at the wings. They have the Heat’s pick this draft and get their own back next, but given the age of the roster, I would think Nolan would want to flirt with the playoffs this year.

Timberwolves
Bring back key FAs – Harden and KAT are must bring backs for this team. They only have three people on the roster in Brook Lopez, Giannis, and Marcus Morris. Bring back the other starters then MLE, LLE, and vet min your way back to the playoffs.

San Antonio Spurs
Guard depth – Poor Dahntay Jones retired. Spurs have 3 playable bigs, 3 good SFs, and a PG. They need more wing depth. Lucky for them, they have enough space for an MLE, LLE and some quality vet mins. Jordo has his 2021 and 2024 pick but that is it, so it’ll have to be via FA or potentially trading Beasley and breaking him up into multiple pieces.

Utah Jazz –
Guard depth – the core here is as good is you can get. Two superstars in Marvin and Oden. A star in Al Jeff who is still as efficient as they get for bigs. Luol and Derrick Jones are solid role players. Jordan Bell coming up from the NDL would probably solve their third big issue. But they need other guards to either score off the bench, or play defense and care for the ball. Mudiay was pretty solid for the Jazz after the acquisition, but he is likely just a game manager that might have a turnover issue unless he has a wild TC or does well as a top option.

Vancouver Grizzlies
Wing defense - This team is so fun and young, and Josh must be happy to be able to just resign Tingus Pingus, im sure the safe plan is to resign Oubre and A+ defender Thabo Sefolosha. That would likely fix the issue there, but look out for Josh to potentially make a splashier move. He has all of his picks and a ton of assets (BI x Kris Dunn).

Golden State Warriors
Guard/Wing depth – Clints patient come up is a blessing to watch as a quasi tree dad to my only son. This team was cooking last year. Adams redemption arc, Dipo and Tatum taking steps, the Jrue acquisition. Unless Clint finally plays Muscala at backup 2-4, he needs someone else to be that third string 1-3, uncamped Sumner probably wont be able to. Probably and LLE and vet mins as the Warriors only have 3.4 (editor update good catch Clint, mental math wasn’t working yesterday) mil in cap.

Los Angeles Clippers
Frontcourt – They have Eddie Griffin and Jerami Grant… that’s it! (editors note Zach Collins may be coming up this year, he looks kinda saucy). Other than a 2 year D-Rose resign at maxish value (only 2 years?) not great resigning luck for Bobby. They’ll try to resign big Vuc and Tobias Harris I imagine then use their MLE, LLE, and vet mins on other bigs and wings, they have D-Rose, Fultz, and Monk (NDL Sexton too!) all playing 1-2. They do have their pick too, prime NDL pick.

Los Angeles Lakers
Backup Bigs – GX has a fun young up and coming team. Ton of young wings, DeAron Fox seems to be making a leap. Hayward and CJ provide a ton of scoring punch, and he has a million options at the wing. Bam and Jakob are trying to do some bash bro shit, but they need a third and forth Bash Bro. Frank Kaminsky is not going to cut it. Look out for GX to get Portis back at a reasonable deal and use his MLE to acquire a better big than Portis. Also has three FRPs this draft including his own at 9, so could make some moves or acquire another young big or two. Though I think GX is looking for a vet to compete.

Phoenix Suns
Better wings/3rd string big – My man Tyler former champ has the inside offense and the guys to operate an inside offense. Big Jok, Bobi, Dwight, Bonga, but most others are really just defenders and shot funnelers. Pretty much the wings and Marquiss Chriss cross apple sauce could be improved upon. Still an awesome team and Jokic +20 pot is going to be insane.

Portland Trailblazers
Wing Defenders/Rebounders and bigs– This team could not stop a nosebleed last year. They did shoot the absolute lights out though. Need some wing defense on this team. Also, Greg Monroe and JJJ are the only bigs, so need a third and fourth big, unless we are playing Markkanen at the 4. One more year of this McCants contract, you got this Quady. He does have the 10th pick so can try to get a big or Lu Dort of they fall.

Sac Kings
Bigs – I was thinking about putting dependent on direction here, but I think Jesse always just deals and does his thing, so might just go for the playoffs again. If he wants to do so, he will need bigs better than Powell and Lord Kazemi (sorry he is a primo rebounder). He does have no cap space though, MLEs, LLES, vet mins, but more likely more impactful will be those crafty trades (he has a sack including the 13th pick and six other peoples picks over the next few season with some of his own) so look for him to also try to offload CP3 somewhere for cap relief.

Seattle SoNicks
Bol Bol
He would be perfect for Bol Bol to join the big baller brand. Please let this happen for the 3rd pick SLN gods/Wes and Joe. (editors note – haven’t even talked to my fellow historian about this, just a cool high thought that came to me.)
Ok that was it. Thanks for reading. Embrace debate below.
