FA Day 1 grades
LePoverty Raptors are back with moar content
2019 181 Celtics Sign PG James Harden for $131,250,000 over 6 years.
This is a league-shifting contract that throws Minnesota into flux and could land Harden in new digs other than Boston. Wowza. Bad luck for the Wolves it seems and a big win for Boston no matter what. He's worth the money.
Grade: A
2019 181 Hornets Sign SG Devin Booker for $93,750,000 over 6 years.
Book was never leaving Orlando but there will not be a discount. Whatever. Free moneys for Charlotte. He's worth it too.
Grade: A
2019 181 Knicks Sign SG Rudy Gay for $22,050,000 over one year.
Nav couldn't afford to lose Gay, particularly after Wade's retirement, so he paid up to create a one-year salary slot for a guy he really needs to be good. No issues here for me. Makes sense not to give him years but probably could have taken that route too and paid less up front.
Grade: A-
2019 181 Hawks Sign SG Tyreke Evans for $118,125,000 over 6 years.
Atlanta retains a hugely important homegrown stud on a flat deal. Not bad! Heimer has his big three locked in and will be a perennial Central contender for the foreseeable future. Maybe a tiny overpay but contextually a must for the Hawks.
Grade: A-
2019 181 Timberwolves Sign C Karl Anthony-Towns for $117,563,750 over 7 years.
I wanna say this is slightly less than the max for KAT? Another deal that just makes sense and had to happen. Wonder whether losing Harden empowers Minny to run inside with Giannis and KAT, hmm...
Grade: A
2019 181 Lakers Sign C Eddy Curry for $12,000,000 over 2 years.
So many positive grades being handed out, wtf. Curry might be a little over the hill, but this is cheap cheap and he might retire anyway. LA needs him to have another good year left, but the regression signs are there. Not a big risk regardless.
Grade: B+
2019 181 Nuggets Sign PG Cory Joseph for $9,975,000 over 2 years.
CoJo is a reliable game manager who will have some trade value potentially for Denver. Not sure what the Nugs are doing directionally but a movable deal.
Grade: B
2019 181 Lakers Sign PG Andrew Harrison for $11,700,000 over one year.
I assume this is going to Indiana in the PG trade. Harrison is vaguely interesting.
Grade: N/A
2019 181 Warriors Sign SG Josh Richardson for $16,369,141 over 4 years.
Whenever I looked at GSW boxes, Josh Richardson looked kinda good. Cheap deal, might be a steady bench guy, not gonna be a home run.
Grade: B+
2019 181 76ers Sign PG Michael Carter-Williams for $4,500,000 over one year.
Sixers really need a PG to fit in with their four very good starters. Not sure MCW is the answer unless DMo commits to balanced, but he's at least mildly interesting? Maybe better players avail for MLEs. Dunno.
Grade: B-
2019 181 Grizzlies Sign SF Kelly Oubre Jr. for $40,000,000 over 5 years.
This is about what Oubre is worth, he should keep getting better and is pretty solid in all areas. Nice number for the Grizz. Will be movable if he wants to trade and shouldn't be an impediment to continuity.
Grade: A-
2019 181 Kings Sign C Willie Cauley-Stein for $54,682,700 over 4 years.
A lot of dinero for WCS, but he looks like a legit starting center in this current climate. Maybe he improves further.
Grade: B-
2019 181 Rockets Sign PG Cameron Payne for $12,500,000 over one year.
Not grading this.
2019 181 Pacers Sign C Jahlil Okafor for $4,500,000 over one year.
Okafor could be featured in Indy if Tong leans into balanced. More upside than a run of the mill MLE? Not sure how good he is.
Grade: B
2019 181 Nuggets Sign C Al Horford for $13,000,000 over one year.
Horford is kinda washed but still a nice vet and a real upgrade for the Nugs. We'll see if he gets dealt or not. More than I would prob want to pay him.
Grade: C+
2019 181 Nuggets Sign SG Terry Rozier for $14,974,375 over 3 years.
Hard to know what to make of Rozier but maybe he gets a chance to play PG again in Denver. Movable on a decent contract.
Grade: B
2019 181 Clippers Sign C Roy Hibbert for $5,000,000 over one year.
Don't really have an opinion on Hibbert. Expiring salary that can log bench minutes.
Grade: B-
2019 181 Jazz Sign PG Darren Collison for $1,750,000 over one year.
Darren Collison is ok.
Grade: B-
2019 181 Heat Sign SG JJ Redick for $1,200,000 over one year.
Nice LLE snag, but also doesn't fix any of the Heat's weaknesses in terms of defense and boards. But will be movable for something else, I bet.
Grade: B
2019 181 SuperSonics Sign SG Eric Gordon for $17,500,000 over one year.
Grade: B-
2019 181 Nuggets Sign SF Julian Wright for $6,000,000 over one year.
Love Wright, a cool specialist, bet he gets traded, good number for him.
Grade: A-
2019 181 SuperSonics Sign PG Avery Bradley for $1,680,000 over one year.
Grade: B-
2019 181 Cavaliers Sign C Kwame Brown for $6,969,699 over one year.
Shockingly Kwame has not retired yet.
Grade: B
2019 181 Jazz Sign SF Jonas Jerebko for $1,750,000 over one year.
Jerebko is still kinda ok.
Grade: B
2019 181 Pacers Sign SF Royce O'Neale for $2,600,000 over 2 years.
Tong can't quit this guy. Complete bum.
Grade: D
2019 181 Bucks Sign C Joakim Noah for $4,500,000 over one year.
Nice MLE pull for a team that needs bigs.
Grade: A
2019 181 Celtics Sign C Kevon Looney for $41,250,000 over 3 years.
Fuck this guy. Too much money for him.
Grade: F
2019 181 Hawks Sign C Kendrick Perkins for $6,600,000 over one year.
Great to retain Perk for Atlanta. Could he have done it for less or more years? Maybe.
Grade: A-
2019 181 SuperSonics Sign PF Noah Vonleh for $5,400,000 over one year.
Grade: B-
2019 181 Celtics Sign PG James Harden for $131,250,000 over 6 years.
This is a league-shifting contract that throws Minnesota into flux and could land Harden in new digs other than Boston. Wowza. Bad luck for the Wolves it seems and a big win for Boston no matter what. He's worth the money.

Why Hornets get an A? Merv was always going to match. I know they get 750 RP, but the opportunity cost of losing out on a valuable player is too high

It’s a D- if you ask me. Kinda like a B- but without the Randle playerHoff wrote: October 11th, 2024, 4:22 pm Why Hornets get an A? Merv was always going to match. I know they get 750 RP, but the opportunity cost of losing out on a valuable player is too high
