AK47 - HOFER - TWolves
Good Afternoon dearly beloved SLNers. We are gathered here this day to inaugurate a fine young Russian lad to the SLN HOF. Yes, you guessed it, the man named after an assault rifle, Andrei Kirlenko, the famous AK47. People have called him many names, the Swiss(Russian?) Army Knife, the StockNess Monster, Mr. All Defense, etc etc. but lets remember him as the game wrecking SF/PF he was for 15 seasons.
Drafted by the Timberwolves with the fourth overall pick in 1999, he famously sat his first two seasons due to his stip. As we know, those type of stips could mean future greatness. It certainly did for AK. He came in his rookie ear and was already putting up 19.9 PPG, 7.8 boards, 2.6 steals, 1.9 blocks, on 44.5% shooting. He was instantly an all defense level forward, and made the All defense teams in every season he played except for 2005 and 2014. He made his first All NBA 2nd team in 2003 when he got his PPG total above the 20 PPG mark (23.4), with more than 5 stocks a game. His final season with the Twolves was his most impressive where he averaged the following and won his first DPOY.
2008 Timberwolves 82 36.0 751 1652 .455 502 597 .841 131 315 .416 10.6 4.3 2.3 3.2 2.0 6 26.0
Unfortunately for AK an the Twolves franchise, he could never take his team over the hump, but always kept his team super competitive in the wild west. He was traded to Dallas in 2009, where he kept up his high level of play for the franchise. He averaged the following in his first season in Dallas.
2009 Mavericks 80 38.1 709 1514 .468 363 426 .852 142 317 .448 9.5 4.4 2.5 2.4 2.7 1 24.0
He was converted to a PF and played a more swiss army knife role in Dallas, but continued to be an absolute dominant defender and better on the glass, with three straight seasons above 10 boards a game from 2010-2012. Hee was traded to the Kings in 2015, and to the Hornets in 2016, where he continued to be a dominant defender, though his offensive talents dissipated.
Overall, AK47 is known for being the league's stockiest player of all time and one of the most perfect plug and play players on any team he was on.
Here's to you AK - may you drink some Russian Vodka and celebrate with close family and friends.
