Bored on a Plane Pt. II: Position Rankings for the Great Debate

Post by Merv »

Here we are once again, bored on a plane. We are mixing Shonda Rhimes and Netflix’s The Residence (surprisingly entertaining) with something that will piss the league off more than Joe’s Contract article. I’m going to rank the starter around the league plus a few fun backups with one key caveat. You can’t call me biased when none of the Magicians are ranked. A. We all know they rank #1 at their respective positions B. No propaganda (or is it)

All players will be named with Pts/Reb/Ast - Stock:TO and shooting splits rounded to 2 digits for simplicity.

PG

1. Luka Doncic - 36/9/12 - 0.85 - 51/44/82
2. Kyrie Irving - 36/6/10 - 1.72 - 50/48/90
3. Jrue Holiday - 27/3/12 - 1.72 - 50/47/92
4. Markelle Fultz - 29/6/10 - 0.75 - 50/40/90
5. Jalen Brunson - 32/4/7 - 0.80 - 48/43/92
6. LaMelo Ball - 23/7/10 - 1.38 - 45/41/86
7. De’Aaron Fox - 23/4/12 - 1.37 - 46/46/84
8. Tyus Jones - 24/6/12 - 1.61 - 48/43/92
9. Fred VanVleet - 27/6/9 - 1.00 - 49/43/92
10. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander - 22/5/6 - 1.40 - 49/47/87
11. Lou Williams - 29/5/6 - 0.69 - 49/46/95
12. James Harden - 25/7/7 - 1.05 - 47/40/93
13. Steph Curry - 28/5/7 - 0.86 - 49/47/86
14. Gary Payton II - 20/6/9 - 1.35 - 46/39/86
15. Trae Young - 17/3/6 (24 min) - 47/42/85
16. D’Angelo Russell - 25/6/9 - 0.95 - 48/45/96
17. Tyrese Maxey - 24/4/8 - 0.75 - 47/43/92
18. Cory Joseph - 26/6/8 - 0.65 - 48/44/92
19. Jerian Grant - 17/5/11 - 0.86 - 48/47/76
20. Tyrese Haliburton - 21/5/7 - 1.33 - 46/39/91
21. Jalen Suggs - 24/4/5 - 0.90 - 47/40/81
22. Langston Galloway - 18/5/6 - 1.31 - 46/39/86
23. Cade Cunningham - 20/5/6 - 0.60 - 46/45/87
24. Ja Morant - 24/5/8 - 0.48 - 47/37/84
25. Jordan Clarkson - 23/4/7 - 0.43 - 50/42/88
26. Dyson Daniels - 13/4/5 - 1.16 - 45/39/76
27. Lonzo Ball - 12/6/11 - 1.26 - 43/30/78
28. Kemba Walker - 22/5/9 - 0.64 - 46/39/88
29. Kris Dunn - 24/5/10 - 0.61 - 46/42/85
30. Scotty Pippen Jr - 13/5/8 - 1.35 - 41/48/91

Some of this was a bit complicated with some of these guys splitting some time at SG or in back up roles. I have no idea where to put Isaac Bonga and would guess he’s around 15. Mostly, I’m very excited for everyone to be pissed off. There’s a pretty big cliff around 19ish separating the for certain starters versus the others.

SG

1. Jamal Murray - 30/6/6 - 1.22 - 47/42/87
2. Zach LaVine - 28/7/4 - 1.00 - 53/50/86
3. Shabazz Muhammad - 34/8/3 - 0.77 - 50/42/95
4. Tyreke Evans - 29/6/3 - 0.90 - 48/42/94

6. Victor Oladipo - 23/7/3 - 1.41 - 45/39/85
7. Donovan Mitchell - 23/6/3 - 1.05 - 47/41/90
8. Anthony Edwards - 21/5/5 - 1.57 - 45/41/87

10. Gordon Hayward - 26/7/4 - 0.72 - 46/39/90
11. Jalen Green - 26/5/4 - 0.84 - 48/43/86
12. Buddy Hield - 25/4/2 - 0.63 - 49/44/92
13. Duncan Robinson - 24/5/3 - 0.53 - 45/44/85

15. Josh Okogie - 15/5/2 - 2.00 - 45/39/85
16. Isaac Okoro - 20/3/2 - 1.46 - 44/36/82
17. Max Strus - 20/6/3 - 0.89 - 46/45/87
18. Jalen Williams - 19/6/4 - 0.86 - 47/44/86
19. Chuma Okeke - 14/7/2 - 1.67 - 44/29/84
20. Anfernee Simons - 21/5/3 - 0.71 - 49/45/86
21. Lu Dort - 15/5/2 - 1.21 - 46/44/87
22. Tim Hardaway Jr. - 26/4/2 - 0.50 - 44/42/89

26. Darius Garland - 15/4/4 - 0.92 - 46/43/88
27. Jaden Springer - 5/4/2 - 1.82 - 44/47/89
28. Cam Thomas - 19/5/3 - 0.64 - 46/43/87
29. Deivdias Sirvydis - 16/5/3 - 0.55 - 45/40/89

There’s a nice drop off after 6. Then another cliff around 10-11. Then they’re all about the same. If you can cleanly differentiate all these SGs, more power to you!

SF

1. Kevin Durant - 33/8/3 - 1.70 - 49/43/89
2. Otto Porter Jr - 31/8/3 - 1.24 - 49/47/93

10. Jayson Tatum - 27/8/3 - 0.56 - 49/44/87
11. Scottie Barnes - 21/8/4 - 0.83 - 48/39/79
12. Chris Boucher - 14/9/1 - 2.55 - 47/31/82
13. Justise Winslow - 16/9/1 - 3.10 - 47/29/70
14. Lauri Markkanen - 23/9/3 - 0.74 - 47/39/87
15. Derrick Jones Jr - 16/10/2 - 3.67 - 38/28/85
16. Kelly Oubre - 19/8/2 - 1.63 - 46/33/92

18. Michael Porter Jr - 20/9/2 - 0.79 - 45/41/75
19. Mikal Bridges - 18/6/2 - 1.53 - 46/45/79
20. Jabari Parker - 22/7/2 - 1.06 - 46/39/93
21. Amen Thompson - 14/6/3 - 1.56 - 44/43/73
22. Jaden McDaniels - 14/5/1 - 2.67 - 45/33/86
23. Herb Jones - 20/6/2 - 0.86 - 46/35/84
24. Caleb Martin - 15/6/2 - 1.46 - 45/39/87
25. Jeremy Lamb - 11/5/2 - 1.50 - 48/49/90
26. Jordan Hamilton - 14/5/1 - 1.22 - 48/39/74
27. Kevin Knox - 10/5/1 - 1.33 - 45/28/83
28. Zaccharie Risacher - 10/6/3 - 1.63 - 41/36/73
29. Ausar Thompson - 8/7/2 - 1.13 - 41/25/65

The upper crust of the SFs are essentially most of the best players in the league right now. However, it really drops off quick. You get a mix of possession/defensive monsters and a couple scorers in the middle of the pack then some useful rotation guys and a few replacement level players.

Big Butts (max 7 PPG)

1. Nerlens Noel - 3/11/1 - 3.46 - 39/0/68
2. John Henson - 3/10/2 - 3.00 - 34/67/59
3. Mo Bamba - 4/10/1 - 3.67 - 41/36/77
4. Kevon Looney - 4/9/1 - 3.78 - 39/09/59
5. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist - 7/12/2 - 2.46 - 40/05/63
6. Larry Sanders - 4/9/1 - 4.00 - 46/00/48
7. Thon Maker - 7/11/2 - 3.10 - 42/44/70
8. Bismack Biyombo - 4/10/1 - 2.33 - 38/00/53
9. Hassan Whiteside - 7/7/1 - 2.80 - 44/00/66
10. Isaiah Jackson - 6/10/1 - 2.64 - 38/25/77
11. Clint Capela - 6/10/2 - 1.93 - 38/00/63
12. Dereck Lively II - 6/9/1 - 2.42 - 41/00/64
13. Luke Kornet - 7/8/2 - 2.00 - 41/48/75
14. Precious Achiuwa - 5/9/1 - 2.09 - 35/25/68
15. Isaiah Stewart - 5/8/1 - 1.82 - 46/40/82
16. Brook Lopez - 6/7/2 - 2.15 - 34/36/83
17. Skal Labissiere - 6/8/1 - 2.10 - 46/50/71
18. Jalen Duren - 5/6/1 - 2.00 - 37/00/72
19. Nic Claxton - 3/7/1 - 1.82 - 40/33/60
20. Marquese Chriss - 5/8/1 - 1.47 - 38/44/73

A dying breed some would say. A few of these guys aren’t even really big butts but with the small number of minutes they still qualify. Lively, IJax, and Bamba are truly going to be unicorns in a near future once some of these guys begin retiring. I can see their trade values going through the roof as we speak.
Bigs who Score that Thang
1. Nikola Jokic - 32/11/5 - 0.68 - 49/48/92
2. Joel Embiid - 29/12/4 - 0.83 - 48/46/91
3. Anthony Davis - 20/14/2 - 3.00 - 44/44/94
4. Jonathan Isaac - 12/12/2 - 4.30 - 44/37/82
5. Andre Drummond - 15/13/2 - 2.30 - 42/00/58
6. Kristaps Porzingis - 24/11/1 - 1.80 - 46/40/90
7. Karl-Anthony Towns - 23/13/4 - 1.38 - 47/49/94
8. Giannis Antetokounmpo - 26/14/4 - 0.94 - 49/21/77
9. Darius Bazley - 14/12/3 - 2.05 - 47/47/80
10. Goga Bitadze - 10/13/2 - 2.32 - 39/27/67
11. Boban Marjanovic - 21/12/1 - 0.87 - 48/32/92
12. Ivica Zubac - 18/14/2 - 1.57 - 46/00/81
13. Deandre Ayton - 20/11/2 - 1.93 - 49/17/85
14. Alperen Sengun - 22/10/5 - 1.42 - 46/35/80
15. Domantas Sabonis - 20/9/3 - 0.58 - 48/43/94
16. Montrezl Harrell - 12/10/2 - 3.19 - 46/00/62
17. Mitchell Robinson - 10/11/2 - 2.85 - 41/00/62
18. Udoka Azubuike - 10/12/1 - 2.43 - 45/00/61
19. Rudy Gobert - 11/11/2 - 2.40 - 43/00/62
20. Greg Monroe - 10/12/2 - 1.86 - 43/00/69
21. Jordan Bell - 7/10/2 - 2.47 - 43/00/76
22. Blake Griffin - 18/10/2 - 1.71 - 46/34/77
23. Victor Wembanyama - 19/11/2 - 1.48 - 44/48/76
24. Jakob Poeltl - 9/10/2 - 1.92 - 45/00/63
25. Bam Adebayo - 13/12/3 - 1.72 - 42/32/66
26. Robert Williams - 9/11/1 - 1.91 - 41/00/69
27. Anthony Bennett - 10/9/1 - 2.30 - 40/18/66
28. Day’Ron Sharpe - 9/10/1 - 1.41 - 41/26/63

This list was a total disaster to try to put together since you start to mix legit scorers with rim protectors and rebounders who may shoot too much. At the very least, I hope it’s a decent representation of the general tiering of the bigs.

Well here it is in totality, written through 2 modes of transportation and through some of my lunch break because I need this RP. I don’t envision this at the be all end all rankings and would really just love to start a discussion. Feel free to DM me all your hate mail.

Excluding Kyrie's off the court nonsense, I'd have him a touch above Luka

PG: FVV and Steph are a little too low I think. Is LaMelo playing PG?
