5 for 5, that became 6 for 5!

Post by Merv »

We haven't had a 5 for 5 in a very long time, and I love these type of things as they give us a platform to start a little discussion and hear from some voices we may not normally hear from.

Question 1.
What team are you most excited to watch this offseason and what do you think they will do?

RB: Curious to see what the Nets do. With Kittles in the mix now, they clearly want to keep making moves, so I look forward to seeing which direction they take this season.

Manty: I think there are a few teams that have very interesting offseason ahead of them. Really interested to see what the Warriors do after Jrue Holiday retired? Are they going to blow it up, or find a good replacement?

Heimer: Most excited to see how mantypas floats his boat. He made a move for Black at the deadline last season and was rewarded with a resign. Then Manty trades for Brunson who is an absolute beast. I don’t think those two guys fit next to each other so it’s safe to say there are moves left to be made. can’t wait to see how he rejiggers the puzzle to try and compete in the toughest conference ever - one that just got even tougher with Jokic on his way to Philly.

Tyler: im most excited for the Pacers. I think Tong has enough NDL ammo to upgrade his big league roster in a meaningful way to maybe add a SF or 2nd big to contend for home court in the East if he is shrewd. On the flipside, does he let Drummond walk and tank for the time since the pre Chris Bosh - Pacers era. Tough call to predict but I think he will try to acquire good young talent and soft tank for a year or two. Could be a team that wheels and deals to extract value all season.

Jesse: Mavericks. They are always agents of chaos and have a ton of fun young players and picks. I think they will make a series of disconnected trades that will still work out for them!

Jordo: I think the Mavs, Hoff has a ton of young talent with a lot of question marks and Hoff is famous for doing fun shit when he gets bored. I like Ament and some of his other fun pieces but he has one year to get out of the tank so I expect him to make a splash.

Merv: I'm probably most excited to see the Cavs. The teams coming out of the tank are always interesting to me because there's a lot of different ways you can try to improve with some builds having more pitfalls than others.

Question 2.
Whose TC are you most excited for?

RB: McCoy’s. Very curious to see what he looks like. Woo has already put in for +8 pounds but will be interesting to see if TC and / or preseason shifts his focus for future TCs.

Manty: Selfishly for my team, really looking forward to Dybantsa and Sorber’s TCs. Outside of Cleveland, monitoring some of the older guys in the east to see if there will be any major regressions (Myles turner, Tyus Jones, Otto porter, Semi, etc).

Heimer: I’ll tell you who i’m not excited for… Nate Ament. Off the backs of a +4 TC literally any progression would be a sight to behold. Like will he keep on trend and turn into Myles fucking Turner ? Lord knows I shit myself when he went +4 after passing on him after luckily jumping from 8 to 3 in last year’s lotto. Cam Boozer ? Now that’s a guy who’s TC i’m excited about.

Tyler: outside of seeing this Dylan Harper supercamp, I’m really excited for Nate Ament. Think he has the bones to be great and was the horse I put some meaningless chips on in a pod to predict he’d be the best player of the lot. Gotta a long way to go to surpass DP, but the pot is the there. Excited for Dybantsa and Boozer too. Loved the top of the last draft.

Jesse: On our team, probably Hugo Yimga Moukouri . He seems like a funny young fella who could have big potential.

Around the league, I want to see all of the 2026 and 2027 draftees. There are lots of fascinating, weirdly shaped, one-dimensional players and I have no clue how they will develop.

Jordo: Derik Queen babay

Merv: I think the Dylan Harper supercamp is the big one for me. If he can turn into a legit top 10 PG, Markelle Fultz will hit the market and cause a lot of chaos.

Question 3.
How would you camp Brandon McCoy with that stip?

RB: I would go all weight. It’s such a weird stip that I feel like you have to go all-in on it to see what Ashes cooked up.

Manty: All weight baby out of pure curiosity. I have no clue what it would do but for it to be a stip, I’m sure it’s mighty powerful.

Heimer: At first glance i’d use at least 70% of his camp allotment on Strength and the other 30% on Inside. This guy throws his body into the fray aka the paint with reckless abandon. No need to waste camps on outside and sounds like he’ll be a perfect fit in Toronto given they run a balanced offense. Beefing up his strength year 1 and feeling it out is the prudent play. Someone on the boards said something like “give me a wrecking ball at PG.” I concur and cue some Miley Cyrus.

Tyler: id immediately go +8lbs to see what happens and adjust from there. Maybe it’s obvious, maybe it’s not. But id lean towards putting all my points in pounds if it seems like it’s working. Otherwise, supplement with jump shot and handles as needed.

Jesse: Of course! I have no idea if he will be good but it would be a shame to bypass one of the most hilarious stips in SLN history.

Jordo: Since its the first time its ever been done, i would go +24 or 26 all weight. Id really want to see what ashes cooked up.

Merv: I'd go all weight +8 at a time so I could deviate for the last one if needed.

Question 4.
How do you feel about the impact of the flatter lotto, and how does this change or not change your opinion on tanking?

RB: I think it’s great. There’s way more parity than ever and the incentives for an all-out tank are way lower, this draft being the prime example of how later picks can be so valuable if they jump.

Manty: I’ve been burned by it in the past and most recently helped by it jumping up to #2. It certainly has added a lot of chaos to the league but I think that’s a good thing. It also should continue to disincentivize egregious tanking and full bottom outs as a top 3 pick is not guaranteed as we’ve recently seen.

Heimer: I feel like there could be an entire podcast on just this one question. Not only does it reduce tanking incentives but I believe it will incentivize teams in the 7-10 seed range to sell at the deadline, so long as they have their pick, to better retool for future seasons with a greater chance at jumping in the lottery. As for teams who don’t have their pick - i’d say it creates more value for veteran players late in season. Maybe even players in general ? There’s no reason for a bad team to be selling guys off for nothing when you’re not guaranteed a top pick. I’d also say it adds different avenues to winning rather than the same old race to the bottom strategy. Teams can hover in the middle and figure it out from there better than before with more valuable picks and more interest on the trade market. Overall a great rule change for the league as a whole.

Tyler: love the flatter lotto odds although I haven’t had a pick in the lottery (before the lottery was run) yet. I definitely think it adds some more intrigue to strategy and the easiest way of forming a dynasty by tanking  for 3 seasons and getting all studs is nerfed pretty hard by the RFA tag rules and flattened lotto odds. I’ve only really intentionally tanked for 3 seasons since the leagues inception so it doesn’t change my personal strategy much. Try to be sustainably good until the bill comes due and then build through free agency. But I do think it should disincentive tanking. We play a fake sim league for fun and no money on the line, why spend time trying to be as bad as possible for as long as possible?

Jesse: I like the flat lotto. People will bitch all they want about good teams jumping, but that is a feature not a bug. The most tried-and-true, boring as fuck strategy is to tank for 4-years, collect several top-5 picks, and consolidate once you are done tanking. If you are in sims for long enough, teams will repeat that strategy ad nausem and it gets boring. It takes no skill. We should see by now that tanking to the very bottom isn't as smart as it used to be and it will require teams to have more foresight and strategy when they pick a direction. Also, like, you can try to win and be young at the same time.

I personally love picking from like 7-15 so will continue to try to acquire picks that project in that range. And then sometimes you will get lucky and one of them will jump.

Jordo: Hate it, change it back, I got fucked every time.

Merv: Jordo is totally wrong. The change is awesome. Tanking is stupid and this makes trading for random picks a lot more exciting.

Question 5.
Who is a player you were completely wrong on and why?

RB: I did not think my guy Kyrie would play this well for this long with so little stip-disruption. When I moved on from him, I thought future owners would get all the same drama but that seems to have largely gone away and he’s still a top PG in the league.

Manty: Jalen Green, I thought he was just too hyper athletic and would have some bad TC luck. I was very wrong he’s an absolute stud.

Heimer: Donovan Mitchell. Boy i thought i caught lightening in a bottle and bought the dip on a top SG in the league. Turns out he’s not that guy. Only a season after arguably his best season ever, he throws up a nothing burger. He shoots a ton which would be great if he could do it efficiently but he shoots 45% and turns it over too much. Struggles at the super sub because he passes too much for the 1 and isn’t strong enough for the 3. Most importantly - no one bid on him cause he absolutely stinks. You’re welcome.

Tyler: hmmm… maybe cooper 🇫🇷? Too early to say but I’ve been pretty bummed with him. But of fully ripe players, maybe Kawhi?? I definitely thought he was pretty underwhelming and was a quiet hater but the gift of a shooting camp catapulted him into an all league player for the next 7 years.

Jesse: Several.

I thought Zbo would be a stud b/c I thought he had the Boban-esque Inside/Jump Shot/Strength trio without jumping, but his jumping wasn't good enough. I was lower on Ricky Rubio early on. There are definitely a bunch of others.

Jordo: Derick White. I thought he'd be the second coming of Jeff McInnis and boy was I wrong.

Zion seemed like he'd be good as a prospect and it just didn't happen. Alex Caruso was really disappointing, I thought he would've been bare minimum a solid game manager with stocks.

Bonus question.
We need a debate. What’s the best fast food French fry?

RB: I love Shake Shack fries. Crinkle cut. Crispy. Salty. What’s not to love

Manty: I don’t really eat much fast food these days but I really used to dig curly fries. Roy Rogers curly fries from way back in the day from those New Jersey restaurants stops were pretty underrated

Heimer: McDonalds. McDonalds. McDonalds.

Tyler: best French fry at a fast food joint has to be McDonald’s. I absolutely adore fast food and I know this is a cop out but it’s just the truth. Culver’s crinkle cut dipped in custard also hits like a truck after a long round of poor golf.

Jesse: Five Guys

Jordo: Hot ass take but Wendys>>>

I gotta go Checker's. It's a unique fry taste and it is so good they sell it in Frylover XL's!

Love RB and his other answers but he should probably get life in Azkaban for that french fry take, unless it's a deliberate troll job (in which case, consider me trolled and an internet chump)

Nothing wrong with the Chicken Shack, but Shake Shack fries are a flaccid, soggy, under-salted F-tier potato product that they have the gall to charge like $6 for. Goes right in the trash next to the In-N-Out fries
