Bored on a Plane: 2027 Season Preview

I’m flying back from Vegas and can’t sleep so might as well earn the RP I burned on Adem Bona back. I’ll take a look at each team, a key question, a strength, and an area I’d improve.

Boston
Playoff Contender
Key Players: Jabari Parker, Reed Sheppard, Justise Winslow
Boston should take a bit of a step forward after a pretty awesome TC from Reed and by bringing in a low turnover, stocky winner in Winslow. I feel like this is a team that’s 1 more piece off of being a title contender but Reed might really take the leap this season and do that himself.
Question: Will the turnovers drop enough to be consistently great?
Strength: Rebounding on the wing
Area for Improvement: Turnovers, 6+ turnovers from Jabari and Reed is hard to work with

Miami
Race for the 8 Seed
Miami made some splashy moves to replace the loss of Kawhi after just narrowly missing the playoffs. I think this is a roster likely headed back into the same fight. Montero is a nice game manager but TD, Sengun, and Chriss’ turnover variance could be too much to handle.
Question: Will they be able to acquire more rebounding for a team that looks like it’ll struggle on the glass
Strength: Shooting. OPJ and TD are elite FG% guys
Weakness: The Possession battle, turnovers and boards will cost this current set up a lot of wins

New Jersey
Lotto
Not totally sure what Kittles and Steven are doing behind tripping balls at a bachelor party. Cooper is fully here unfortunately he’s pretty alone on this roster.
Question: Can they churn enough throughout the season to maximize some value in RP?
Strength: Cooper 🇺🇸
Weakness: Point guard, nonexistent in swampland

New York
Title Contender
A lost season with a ton of injuries. Despite their age, Kyrie and Turner can win a series on their own and Jalen Green is growing into a force. This shouldn’t be the Knicks of old with their bigs aging not being as good, but they’ll be plenty good. My only question is if Nav reaches a point where it may make more sense to cash out for max return like Matt did.
Question: Can they stay healthy?
Strength: Elite scoring
Weakness: Depth, there’s hardly anyone coming off the bench you’d feel good about

Orlando
Title Contender
Last year’s champs return 7/8 key contributors and Bagley/Scoot/Edey had positive TCs.
Question: Is the depth good enough to withstand an injury?
Strength: Possession battle, elite rebounding and low turnovers
Weakness: Bench depth after losing Clarke, Banton, and Gobert

Philadelphia
Race for the 8 seed
DMo made a huge swing for Jokic which should raise the ceiling of this squad. Having arguably the best TC really helps! Maybe some movement with the top teams opens the door for Philly to be safely in the playoffs but they feel like a team that’s fighting to get in the last few sims
Question: Will Jokic turn them from pesky to a true playoff team
Strength: Point of attack defense with Suggs
Weakness: Turnovers could be costly for a squad featuring Suggs/Gelo/Jokic

Washington
Playoff Contender
Wes continues to run back the same roster and not spend his RP. I feel like we can look at the Bullets and think of the “Do something” meme. They’ve had a glaring hole at SF, have a ton of RP, and some picks maybe going in vs out is the move.
Question: Will Wes risk it for the biscuit?
Strength: Frontcourt. Maybe the best front court in the league with AD/Doke/Skal
Weakness: SF, these guys might actually start Miles Bridges

Atlanta
Title Contender
I’m drinking the Hawks kool-aid, I don’t know how long he can keep it together but this year’s squad is loaded.
Question: Can Kuminga or Barnes dominate at SG or is there a move needed?
Strength: starting 5 talent. SGA/Barnes/Kuminga/Boozer/Lively is stacked
Weakness: Turnover variance. I feel like a broken record but if SGA stays around 3.5 TOVs it’s going to be hard to build a team that wins at an elite level in spite of that

Charlotte
Lotto
They had a good run, Semi is the last man standing and should be moved for a monster package.
Question: What does Semi bring back in return?
Strength: Semi is the best player on the market
Weakness: Talent, this team is pretty devoid on talent beyond Semi

Chicago
Lotto
The Luka era is over. It’ll be fun to watch the young guys play here and Matt sold his team for a pretty large amount of stuff. He’s well set up as one of the few tankers and armed for a switch flip in 2 years.
Question: Is Matt willing to Jesse churn a bit to maximize value or will he full bottom out this season?
Strength: Top tier prospects in Ament and Dash
Weakness: Timeline. Matt only has his picks this year and next, so he’ll need some lotto luck to fully maximize the window

Cleveland
Race for the 8 seed
Tank clock is up and Cleveland has to win now. There’s some stuff here, will be curious to see it sim.
Question: Can Black and Brunson coexist to Manty’s benefit
Strength: Ausar Thompson, he has a chance to blossom as a top 5 wing in SLN
Weakness: Depth. This team is going to be putting a lot of faith in AJ Dybantsa as it stands

Detroit
Playoff Contender
A feisty team this past year, RB seemed to land on a good DC and they dominate the glass.
Question: Will RB be open to making a major move for a stud, ie Semi?
Strength: Front court defense. Bazley/Gafford/Mobley can really guard
Weakness: Scoring, behind Cade this team doesn’t really have a scorer

Indiana
Lotto
Coming off a disappointing year in Indy, they seem poised to continue to rebuild except now with their own picks.
Question: Will Fox finally get moved and for what?
Strength: Young pieces, Sarr/Philon/Yang/Huan all look interesting
Weakness: Rebounding, it’s Drummond and basically no one else

Milwaukee
Playoff Contender
I’m not 100% what Derek is up to. He’s made some flips to maximize value on older role players but KP and Tyus remain in place for now. He could try to sell those guys before the contracts get too bad and could probably remain solid enough to fight for a playoff spot depending on the return.
Question: Is it time to move KP and Tyus?
Strength: Solid pieces, 1-8 for Milwaukee are all pretty good players albeit maybe not so much high end as KP ages.
Weakness: Lack of true star talent

Toronto
Title Contender (Raptors Year)
Some are ready to crown them Eastern Conference champs after the Fultz trade. Toronto has a nice mix of elite talent and depth with few holes.
Question: Will they lose a game? 😉
Strength: Elite talent, Wemby/Amen/Fultz is about as good as it gets
Weakness: Big depth? But that’s really just nit picking. It’s a sound roster going into day 1

Dallas
Title Contender
Any team with the best player is a title contender but I think this team is likely too thin to truly compete.
Question: How many days into the season before Hoff trades one of these guys to break them into more players?
Strength: Elite talent, Luka/AG/JI is the raptors west of high end talent
Weakness: Depth, these aren’t the backups you’re looking for

Denver
Lotto
#FreeThybulle. Kipke is mid rebuild with some interesting pieces although that Risacher deal is unfortunate. DLo/RJ/Matisse should fetch some value this season.
Question: Does Kipke move his vets now?
Strength: Risacher looks great and Grand Rapids is loaded
Weakness: Bigs. They literally have none

Houston
Race for the 8 seed
After an underwhelming year, sources tell me Nolan is rethinking the makeup of the roster.
Question: Where do you go from here?
Strength: Rebounding. This front court will maul you and rebound at an extremely high level
Weakness: Back court, GP2 might’ve died last season and PG is ancient

Minnesota
Lotto
This team is bad. Giannis has wasted his prime years sadly.
Question: What is the plan?
Strength: Giannis, he should be the guy you can turn into some fun stuff
Weakness: The roster, there’s like 3-4 guys on this team I think most people would have interest in. The rest is rough!

San Antonio
Title Contenders
Returning the entire roster with a nice sprinkle of Bronny for all the media coverage. The Spurs were one game short of the finals and are led by Melo entering his prime (again).
Question: How fixed is this roster? Will it be malleable if needed?
Strength: Guard play, LaMelo/Jaden/Dick are a lethal group that carry the Spurs night in and night out
Weakness: Front court depth, 3 total bigs on the roster, Jordo is going to need to figure out how to add some type of big depth

Utah
Lotto
Year 3 of the tank, FVV and Sabonis were brought in during FA. Could they stick around to help win 41 games this year or next? Not sure. I think Ralph will plan on being awful this year.
Question: What moves can Ralph make to set the table for the 41 wins he’ll need next season?
Strength: Domas Sabonis, probably the second best PF in the league. He should have good trade value or will be someone who can help Utah win in the future.
Weakness: Useful young players. There’s not a lot here beyond the very recently drafted guys which could make trading for better players a challenge.

Vancouver
Playoff Contender
The Grizz are one move away from being a true title contender to me. We mentioned it on the pod but I think truly elite talent matters in the playoffs and the Grizz have a lot of good players more than great ones. 50+ win regular season team though.
Question: Will Josh get aggressive and land the high level talent that can push him over the edge?
Strength: Rim Protection. Ware and Goga do about 7 blocks per game and are a key part of the Grizz success
Weakness: High end talent, Jaylen Brown is good but is he good enough to win a title as your best player?

Golden State
Playoff Contender
Clint rolls back more or less the same roster which should safely be a playoff team this year.
Question: Is Boogie Fland good enough to start at PG all year?
Strength: 4/5 starters are very good
Weakness: Point guard play, it’s a gaping hole on this roster and Clint is betting his season on Boogie and Egor at this stage

LA Clippers
Race for the 8 Seed
Bobby made a splashy move for Book and Peterson already looks incredible. Love the addition of Brandon Clarke even if it sucked for me.
Question: Is Bobby going to continue adding to the roster?
Strength: Scoring guards, Shabazz/Darryn/Booker could combine for 85 points per game
Weakness: Positional defense, the defense grades aren’t pretty here. Will keep an eye out on the Clippers opponent FG%

LA Lakers
Lotto
God awful.
Question: How much return will GX get for Lonzo?
Strength: Meleek’s TC, otherwise it’s bleak
Weakness: Rebounding, not that he wants to actually rebound

Phoenix
Title Contenders
A lot rides on the big question but the rest of this team is very deep and very talented.
Question: Is Dylan Harper good enough already to lead a title caliber roster?
Strength: Depth, Tyler can throw out really solid players for an entire 2 deep except at PG
Weakness: Point guard, if Dylan is ready, then it’s just a back up question. The rest of this squad is stacked and fits.

Portland
Race for the 8 Seed
Stuck in quick sand a bit. The Blazers are neither good nor bad. Find them in Merriam Webster under Mid.
Question: Is it time to sell?
Strength: Positioning. There’s no strength to the roster but the Blazers have an alright cap sheet and all their picks. This enables them the ability ti pivot in either direction.
Weakness: Lack of talent, decent amount of fine-good players but nothing that would make you feel great.

Sacramento
Playoff Contender
“Assembling the worst possible 47 win team”, you’re succeeding bud, and I’m sure 90% of them will be gone by day 80.
Question: Who does Jesse actually want to go get?
Strength: Versatility, a typical Jesse roster where the DC can change every sim and guys can play all over
Weakness: Boredom, even if they were elite, the guy would trade half the team

Seattle
Playoff Contender
Brunson to Castle takes them out of preseason title contention. Whitmore returns and should take on a larger role as Nick pivots younger.
Question: How much is Nick willing to sell to get younger vs capitalizing on a flatter west?
Strength: Stonks. An insanely stocky team that brings in Castle instead of Brunson. Nick is the Stonk Man
Weakness: PG Unknown. Castle might be good or might not be ready. If he’s not, Nick will have to be quick to make a move.

All in all, despite all the Raptors-Mavs finals talk after some big trades, this year feels pretty open where there’s a lot of good teams that could be one key acquisition away from truly contending and in the playoffs anything can happen. Make more deals!!

Also weird logic between the suns and Sonicks.
Suns get rid of okogie and Fultz. Replace PG with an unproven rookie contract = title contenders
Sonicks get rid of Brunson. Replace PG with an unproven rookie contract = playoff contenders 🤔
